Chapter 173 Joining the Third Legion
Laurie Rick also tried to talk him out of it.
He and Caleb did value Adrian Whitmore. That much was true.

But everyone fought on the front. Did it really matter which legion a person served in? They could cooperate anywhere.
Then Adrian said, without the slightest hesitation, “General Ashford, Colonels, you don’t need to persuade me. I’m transferring.”
Orion laughed under his breath.
Wonderful.
He had just finished coaxing one little stubborn thing.
Now a big stubborn thing had walked right up to him.
“Major Whitmore, give me a reason. And you know I prefer the truth.”
Orion’s
gaze seemed calm, but it carried the pressure of cold flame.
Adrian swallowed the lie already on his tongue.
When he spoke again, he told the truth.
“My youngest brother said he planned to join the Second Legion after graduation. I don’t have much I can do for him, and I won’t force him to accept me as his older brother. I only want to be in the same legion as him, so if danger comes, I can stand in front of him.”
Caleb went quiet.
Laurie’s expression turned fascinating.
If Adrian had given some other reason, they really would have needed to investigate.
But this?
Now they were awake.
Laurie immediately coughed twice and put on his Second Legion colonel face.
“Major Whitmore, as far as I know, your youngest brother is Elias Whitmore. He’s engaged to Caelan Rockefeller. Future Fourth Legion, no question.”

“The brother I mean is not Elias Whitmore.”
Adrian corrected him at once.

“I mean Julian Shaw, the maker who upgraded my Gen-2 mecha. As for Elias, he is not my real brother.”
He took a breath.
The next words sounded less like an explanation and more like something that had been pressing inside him for too long.
“I lived with Elias for eighteen years. But whenever I think of him enjoying the Whitmore family’s wealth, everyone’s favor, and everyone’s protection, while my real brother had to count every expense, live carefully, and work himself half to death just to enter the Imperial Military Academy that Elias could have entered with one sentence, I feel angry. I feel like I can’t breathe.”
Orion lowered his eyes.
He did not look at the anger in Adrian’s face.
He only asked, “Anything else?”
“I can’t become Caelan Rockefeller’s supporter either. He left my brother to die. I’m selfish. I can’t accept that.”
With that sentence, Adrian cut off his own retreat completely.
Caelan was the Fourth Legion’s heir.
And Adrian had admitted resentment toward that heir.
Orion’s test was still not over.
“Have you considered the possibility that Julian only said it casually? Maybe he was lying to you. Maybe he has no intention of joining the Second Legion at all.”
He looked at Adrian.
“If he chooses another legion in the end, will you still force a transfer like this?”
Adrian met Orion’s eyes.
“Yes.”

Chapter 173 Joining the Third Legion
Any other legion commander might have assumed Adrian had been beaten senseless by insectoids.
That kind of interview answer would be rejected by most legions.
Even star pirates might think twice.
As General Ashford, as the commander of the Second and Third Legions, Orion should have rejected such an unstable person.
But as Orion, as Julian’s Alpha, he admired Adrian’s decisiveness.
Just as he admired Adrian’s courage on the battlefield.
So Orion held out his hand.
Adrian took it, visibly caught off guard.
Orion said, “The Second Legion Vanguard Regiment already has two colonels in place. It doesn’t need another. But the Third Legion Vanguard Regiment still needs a strong partner for Colonel Zoya Vance. The Third Legion welcomes you, Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Whitmore.”
Adrian froze.
“General…”
A forced inter-legion transfer would normally strip a soldier of every rank and send him back to the bottom.
But if the receiving command recognized his value, it could restore a suitable rank.
Orion was not only giving Adrian back his original rank.
He was giving him the promotion Adrian would have received at this medal ceremony too.
Adrian released Orion’s hand and gave him a solemn military salute.
“Thank you.”
