Chapter 431 The Emperor Knew
Oren shouted and caught his younger brother’s raised arm before the blow could fall.
“Get out.”
Finished
Caelan remained where he was, stubbornly facing Marston as though he intended to fight him to the end. Oren’s patience finally broke.
“I said get out!”
Only when his uncle truly lost his temper did Caelan look at his father one last time. Then he turned and left, every step heavy with resentment.
Oren waited until he was well out of earshot.
Marston slowly returned to his seat. His gaze settled on the framed photograph on the desk, where his wife smiled as brightly as ever. His eyes quietly reddened.
Hathaway.
What am I supposed to do?
What can I do?
In the end. Marston did not cancel the surveillance.
He had found an exceptionally reliable spiritual adviser,
“You don’t know what to do?” Julian asked, visibly unimpressed. “Then don’t do anything.”
Marston had said far too much. Julian had not understood most of it, and they were watching someone else, not him.
Oren approached Marston again soon afterward.
He had apparently reached the limit of what he could endure from the war between father and son, so he made a decision.
He would take Caelan and Elias away from the border.
“Instead of letting them stay here and make more trouble for you, send them back to school. You can have your people travel with us and continue watching Elias.”
Oren was one of the Five Speakers of the Council and the Empire’s finance minister. He could not remain at the border indefinitely.

Caelan and Elias were about to return to school as well.
Going home was fine.
Better than fine.
Marston initially refused.
Then Orion made the final call.
“Leaving Elias here accomplishes nothing. Let him go. Use him as bait and see what else comes to the surface.”
They were still walking through fog.
Every possible opening that might break the deadlock mattered.
Once permission was granted, Oren acted as though Marston might change his mind at any second. The very next day, he boarded a starship for the capital world with Caelan, Elias, and the Council delegation.
Caelan had been a disappointment.
Prince Harold, at least, was working with remarkable enthusiasm and had already produced a new lead.
Lady Beatrice Watson had established contact with Rowan.
“My father has always guarded against me, but I overheard him. He and Corvo Holt are planning to advance. The procedure started today.”
Since being expelled from the Imperial palace, Beatrice had barely dared leave her residence.
Once, she had been arrogant enough to look down on almost everyone.
She had been the Emperor’s first lover and had given birth to his eldest son before Celeste Ashford was crowned Empress.
The Imperial couple had never been close. They separated in less than a year, so quickly that people later joked even Orion’s birth must have been a stroke of luck.
Alexis did not love Celeste.
Beatrice had once taken great satisfaction in that.
Only now did she understand the truth.

Alexis had not loved Celeste. He had not loved Beatrice either. He did not even love Seraphina Blackwell, the woman who remained beside him now.
He loved only himself.
He did whatever pleased him in the moment.
He was insane.
“She said her name was Maria. Holy Mother Maria…”
Beatrice tried to remember every detail.
“The Emperor’s health? It had been poor for decades, but the serious problems probably began more than thirty years ago. He often fell into long sleeps. Mm… he rarely agreed to see anyone.”
Every question Rowan asked was sharp and precise. Beatrice’s memories came in fragments, but those fragments contained a surprising amount of useful information.
“Oh, right. That black-market serum… I think I saw it in the palace once. Seraphina Blackwell had it.”
Rowan’s pupils contracted.
At the same moment, inside the Imperial palace, Alexis sat beside a window for once.
He lifted his gaze toward the distant part of the capital where Beatrice and Rowan were. meeting. Like a lion lying low before a kill, he wore a smile of chilling cruelty.
“Now that you know, what will you do next, Orion Ashford Mulholland?”
Rowan transmitted the information to the border immediately.
Atlas, Harper, and Marston all changed color when they heard it. Cold dread rose inside them like dense smoke.
“How can that be possible? He… I… no, why would he do this? Has he lost his mind too?”
Harold could barely form a coherent sentence. He almost called his mother on the spot, desperate for her to say the entire thing was false.
Alexis might have called Harold an idiot at every opportunity, but he had never treated him harshly.
He had even told Harold that Harold was the only son he had left.

Wasn’t that practically a promise that the throne would be mine? That Orion would never even get close?
“Wake up, Harold. As long as Orion is alive, you don’t have the slightest chance.”
Helen rolled his eyes at his fiance and wondered how he had ever been blind enough to choose this man.
“If Orion hadn’t been presumed dead back then, do you honestly think I would have picked you?”
Harold: “…”
Seriously?
Could you show even a little mercy?
Do I not have any dignity?
Caleb was the first to laugh at the sight of Harold being scolded into silence, looking like the most pathetic lion in the universe.
Once Caleb broke, the other generals lost the fight against their laughter too.
