Besides, the three royals had been fighting directly. They had no reason to waste attention spying on Julian.
If the watcher truly was the Brood Mother…
What did it want from him?
While Orion considered that question, several familiar, identical figures arrived by different routes on famous commercial worlds deep inside the Empire early that morning.
They wore the same nun’s robes and matching veils. Their eyes, faces, expressions, and movements were indistinguishable.
Every one of them was a nun.
Every one of them was Holy Mother Maria.
“Passengers, welcome to Mercury Star. I am Parker, the planetary central AI. On behalf of every member of the Mercury Star staff, I wish you a pleasant visit.”

Passengers crowded the observation windows of the civilian starliner and gazed at the enormous commercial world ahead.

Four silver rings locked around the planet with mechanical precision. Lights crawled across their surfaces beside the exhaust trails of passing ships, resembling data racing through the pathways of a circuit board.
Mercury Star stood where the Central and North Regions met. Countless commercial giants maintained headquarters there, making it a top-tier trading world and one of the financial centers of the entire Empire.
The planet rejected darkness.
Hundreds of millions of low-orbit illumination satellites wove a cold white net around it. Every inch of the surface remained exposed beneath eternal light as harsh and clean as an operating table.
There was no night or day.
Only business and entertainment.
A paradise built for money. A sanctuary for the rich.
“Dad, hurry! Hurry, we’re here!”
Elsie Reed wore a white princess dress and smiled with the warmth and brilliance of sunlight. Her face, however, was far too pale, and her body was painfully thin.
She suffered from a severe genetic disorder.
It had nearly passed beyond treatment.
Treatment was over.
They could not afford more.
“I’m coming!”
Daniel Reed followed her off the starliner, suitcase in hand and the same bright smile on his face.

Daniel had once worked as a clerk at Timeglow Apothecary. He had also lived through one experience that was anything but ordinary.
Few people would have believed him if he talked about it.
He had once worked beside His Grace Julian Shaw.
Well…
That had been during the period when His Grace was sallow and underfed, had earned admission to the Imperial Military Academy, yet remained so poor that he could barely buy food and had been forced to take a job at the pharmacy.
Those days were long gone.
Daniel had left his position. Now he wanted only to spend every credit he had saved and stay beside his daughter through the final stretch of her life.
“Let’s go, go, go!”
Elsie grabbed Daniel and ran. They dropped their luggage at the hotel as quickly as possible, then headed straight for Mercury Star’s famous cathedral-themed restaurant.
The building offered soaring Gothic architecture, brilliant multicolored stained glass, and ethereal hymns drifting through the halls.
Sacred and immaculate, it was one of the planet’s most popular places for prayer and blessings.
Elsie had only one wish.
After she was gone, her father had to keep living well.
So when she entered the restaurant, she did not think about food. She immediately bowed her. head and prayed for Daniel with all the sincerity she possessed.
That was when…
She saw an astonishingly beautiful nun.
Snow-pale skin. Blood-red lips. Dignified and holy.
The nun seemed to notice Elsie’s gaze and began singing softly. Her range climbed impossibly high and spread extraordinarily wide, like a summons issued by a divine being. Every guest in the restaurant sank beneath its spell.
“Skritch…”

Her hearing had always been exceptional. Though she was a Beta, she could hear as well as most Alphas. Several teachers had called her a genius.
Her luck had simply been terrible. She had developed a severe genetic disease-the sort of illness people from the lowest rung of society could never afford to have.
“Skritch…”
Elsie tried to close her eyes and surrender to the sacred baptism like everyone around her.
The strange noise kept growing louder.
Not merely louder.
Denser.
More frantic.
It filled her with an unease she could not explain.
Elsie snapped her eyes open and searched the room in fear.
Everyone else remained lost in the hymn. Even her father had closed his eyes.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling sick again?”
Daniel noticed the change in his daughter and opened his eyes immediately.
Elsie never understood what made her act.
She grabbed his hand and blurted, “Dad, I can’t catch my breath. Maybe there are too many people in here. Can we go outside?”
The instant Daniel heard she was struggling to breathe, he hurried her out of the restaurant.
Elsie moved fast. Before long, she was running despite the weakness of her body.
Go. Hurry. Faster…
“Ahhh!”
A horrifying scream erupted from the cathedral almost the moment father and daughter cleared the entrance.
“Roar!”
