“What’s so impressive about that? It was probably transformation tech. That stuff has been popular for years. You know that. If you like it so much, I’ll buy a set and try it for you sometime…”
The explanation apparently satisfied her, and the couple soon disappeared into the crowd.
The woman never realized that she had witnessed no technology at all.
She had seen an Alpha’s unique gift.
“Keep following the Wynn Sterling lead. Yuzuki Blackwell is highly alert, so maintain only light surveillance on her side.”
Rowan climbed into a hovercar as he issued the order through his earpiece.
“And remember the rule. Protect yourselves. Every one of you comes back alive.”
“Yes, sir!”
Once every operative confirmed, Rowan drove straight toward the capital spaceport.
He should have left several days earlier. Neither Rowan nor Orion enjoyed intrigue and dirty schemes, but both men understood them far too well.
They had concluded that the military contained moles. Those spies watched their every movement and relayed updates to the traitor network with extraordinary speed.
As long as the enemy knew Rowan remained on the capital world, security would stay tight and no useful information would surface.
Once he was officially recalled, however, the hidden players would naturally begin moving again.
The meeting at Starlight Summit proved it.
As one of the capital’s most exclusive members-only business restaurants, Starlight Summit possessed an exceptionally advanced screening system capable of identifying every technological disguise.
If sophisticated technology could not pass, makeup and clothing certainly would not.
Fortunately, Rowan’s disguise was not technological and remained invisible to the system.
He smiled coldly.

He had not heard a word spoken at the table. He could not even read the pair’s lips. Their next moves, however, would reveal enough for him to reconstruct the outline of the conversation.
Rowan transferred to a starship and returned to the outer defense line at maximum speed.
Meanwhile, after two or three continuous days of fighting, the battle in the void reached a decisive turn.
“Running again? Is that all you know how to do? You weren’t this spineless before!”
Under Harper’s control, Dragonlord pursued the retreating enemy at full speed. Every sweep of its wings brought down dense curtains of dark-violet lightning.
The Blazingwing Gold Scorpion, Demonflower Blood Mantis, and Giant-Jawed Stag Beetle moved quickly enough to avoid the strikes.
The swarm straggling behind them did not.
Dragonlord was not the only terrifying pursuer. Emberwing, now evolved into a golden roc, flew wrapped in radiant gold. Every insectoid that approached was scorched before it could touch a feather.
Emberwing had once feared venom.
Then it learned an ancient Blue Star language and discovered that old records described it as a sacred bird blessed against every poison.
Its confidence had since become unbearable.
“What a waste,” someone complained. “Another 3S-class core would’ve been nice.”
Orion instead signaled for Julian to recall Alkaid and spoke over the strategic channel.
“End the pursuit. Eliminate the swarm they abandoned, gather every core in one place, and establish a temporary defense line.”
“Yes, sir!”
Many soldiers wanted to continue. Humanity had never experienced a battle this satisfying.
They had expected the three royal insectoids to resist fiercely. Instead, the creatures lost their nerve as the fighting continued and eventually stopped daring to meet the humans head-on.
Perhaps they had finally recognized humanity’s strength. Perhaps they were genuinely frightened.

Either way, they had turned around and fled with the surviving swarm.
It was almost funny.
Honestly.
But a desperate enemy should never be chased into unknown territory.

Insectoid intelligence rose and fell without warning. The retreat might conceal a trap. Humanity’s internal situation was unstable as well, and the military could not afford to venture too far beyond its line.
Julian watched the retreating swarm. His amber cat eyes were extraordinarily clear, like flawless glass capable of revealing every hidden stain.
“Still spying!”
He sounded completely serious.
Beside him, Orion had been directing the battle and was just about to steal a quick look at his
cat.
