Chapter 442 You Are Cute Too
“Oh.”
Orion assumed that single response was all the little machine would offer.

They remained in each other’s arms for a while longer. Then Julian spoke so softly that Orion nearly thought he had imagined it.
“You’re cute too.”
One sentence.
Orion would not say whose heart dissolved on the spot.
There was, however, one person lying inside the treatment room who had recovered too quickly and woken far too early. Rowan had spent years in intelligence, and his hearing was sharp enough to be a curse.
He did not move.
Not even slightly.
He did not dare open his eyes, afraid the person with even sharper senses would realize he was awake.
The last man who interrupted Orion had been Caleb Hayes. Ever since Caleb advanced to 3S- class and became capable of sparring with him, Orion had spent days grinding him into the floor.
“I object!”
News that Julian intended to lead troops into the Empire’s interior had barely spread before Atlas Ashford became the first person to slam the table. Harper Sloane and Marston had said nothing, but the old marshal exploded.
“You’re just like that useless emperor who fathered you! Only an incompetent Alpha sends his own Omega into danger!”
Atlas’s eyes were red when he said it.
Outsiders would not have understood.
Every general present did.
He was thinking of Celeste Ashford.

His daughter’s fate hurt him more deeply than those of either son. Not because he loved his sons less, but because the choices his sons made had belonged to them. Celeste’s meeting with Alexis, on the other hand, had happened because Atlas arranged it.
A century had passed.
There was one truth the old marshal rarely mentioned, and no one who knew it dared bring it up before him.
Atlas had once been Emperor Alexis Mulholland’s teacher.
Long ago, when Alexis was still the crown prince, he had resembled Orion. He learned to fly beneath Atlas’s protection, traveled through the Second and Third Legions under an alias, became the closest friend of Atlas’s eldest son, Marcus Ashford, and was recognized everywhere as a brilliant Alpha.
Later, Alexis took the throne and married Celeste.
It should have brought joy upon joy and joined two families that were already close.
Instead, Alexis stopped paying attention to the military and grew increasingly erratic after the marriage. He allowed the nobility and the Council to carve away troops that had once belonged exclusively to military command.
The military’s old division had, in every meaningful sense, been created by Alexis himself.
Atlas once confronted him and tried to persuade his former student to stop making such ruinous decisions.
Alexis gave him only one answer.
“It is useless.”
Three words destroyed everything Atlas had continued believing in.
From that moment forward, he lost the disciple he had raised with his own hands.
Atlas had once thought Alexis Mulholland was different from the other calculating, selfish members of that family.
He had been wrong.
Just as Atlas feared, the marriage between Alexis and Celeste did not survive for long. They argued, separated, and eventually refused to see one another unless absolutely necessary.
Alexis remained seated in the Imperial palace.

Celeste went to the border alone.
An Alpha-Omega mark, however, was a bond neither side could simply sever. The higher their compatibility, the more an Omega paid to remove it.
The Emperor and Empress had never undergone a formal compatibility test, but specialists estimated that their rating reached 90 percent.
If Celeste attempted to erase Alexis’s mark, the process would either kill her or leave her permanently crippled.
She was the Empire’s foremost Omega and one of humanity’s greatest hopes. She could not destroy herself that way.
So the estranged Imperial couple continued meeting at set intervals. At least once each year, they spent Celeste’s heat together.
That was how Orion was conceived.
Less than two years after his birth, Celeste died in battle.
Atlas knew his daughter had made her own choice. He still could not stop blaming Alexis.
If Celeste had not chosen the wrong man, if her Alpha had stood beside her at the front and protected her, then a peak S-rank Omega like her would never have needed to burn away her life.
“Alexis was incompetent. He couldn’t protect his Omega. And the two of you planning to follow the same path?”
Prince Harold Mulholland: “?”
You’re yelling at Orion. Why am I getting dragged into this too?
—
are you
Harold looked toward Helen with wounded expectation, clearly hoping his Omega would offer at least a little comfort.
Helen rolled his eyes.
His expression practically spelled out every thought: Marshal Ashford is right. You aren’t strong enough. You can’t properly protect a noble narcissus like me. Try harder.
Nothing made a person more miserable than comparison.
Harold had already received Helen’s contempt. Surely Orion, who was allowing Julian to enter danger, would suffer even worse.
