Chapter 444 A Warning From the Emperor

Harold: “…”
Orion Ashford, I am going to kill you!
Julian’s escort remained unchanged. He still received one full-strength division directly under the Second Legion: the Second Division attached to Adrian Whitmore’s assault regiment.
It was a complete division.
The First Legion regiment did not even count toward that total.
“Concentrate on resolving the First Legion’s own problems. You don’t need to worry about Julian’s security.”
Evening color spread quietly across the sky, as if an angel had overturned God’s palette and spilled soft, vivid light through the clouds.
Orion stood at the head of the farewell party and addressed Harold and Helen, who would accompany Julian into the interior.
Harold sulked and refused to answer.
Helen remained far more composed.
“Don’t worry.”
Orion turned to Marston and shook his hand once more.
“General Marston, I’m counting on you.”
No more words were needed.
Rowan remained beside Julian, watching Little Sir yawn with listless exhaustion.
The moment Julian noticed Orion preparing to speak to him again, he turned around and boarded the starship without looking back.
Orion could only smile helplessly.
Everyone else in the farewell party laughed without showing him the slightest mercy.
Only Atlas, standing farther away, released a quiet sigh.
He wanted to speak.
He had no idea what to say.

“Atlas, what’s with all the sighing? Anyone who didn’t know better would think someone borrowed money from you and refused to pay it back.”
Grandpa Boone had just finished eating. He picked at his teeth while giving Atlas a look of open disdain.
Grandpa Carter and the others turned as well. Something about Atlas had seemed wrong all day.
“It’s nothing.”
Atlas shook his head. The starship had not even lifted off when he left the crowd alone.
Only after putting a great distance between himself and everyone else did he open his wrist terminal.
A new message waited there. The sender was listed as Unknown Contact.
“Do not come back”
Four words.
No context.
Not even punctuation.
Yet Atlas knew that strange, stripped-down style better than anyone.
The sender was his only disciple and his son-in-law. Atlas had once believed that, top-tier Alpha possessed even greater talent than Marcus and would reach 3S-class before Marcus, Harper, or
Marston.
He was Orion’s father.
The Emperor of the Empire.
Alexis Mulholland.
Atlas did not know what Alexis intended. Perhaps he feared the military would disrupt his plan. Perhaps some forgotten piece of conscience had awakened and made him spare a trace of goodwill for Julian.
Atlas knew only that he had grown old.
He could not change the children’s decisions.
