Chapter 468 The Path She Chose

Yuzuki cradled Suzuki’s body as though she had discovered a priceless treasure. She examined him with meticulous attention and showed no awareness that armed enemies surrounded her.

She disappeared into her own world, rushless in her obsession, mad with perfect clarity and devoted beyond reason.

“Yuzuki Blackwell!”

A furious shout rose from the crowd. The voice seemed to travel across time itself and wrench Yuzuki away from the “miracle” in her arms.

She went still, as though remembering something or mourning it until an elderly man stepped forward and removed the morph device covering his face.

Dr. Thorne.

“Teacher…”

Yuzuki smiled.

The blazing crimson of her lips seemed to fade. Her eyes glowed clear green, and for one instant she looked like the young woman who had first stood before her teacher and confessed how desperately she wanted to enter his laboratory.

Sincere.

Earnest.

Filled with limitless expectation and fervor for biological science.

Dr. Thorne knew it was only an appearance, a mask hiding Yuzuki’s complete absence of remorse.

When he remained unmoved and no longer watched her as his chosen successor, her smile weakened.

“You know everything?”

She phrased it as a question.

It sounded like certainty.

“You used the knowledge I gave you to harm humanity. You served the insectoids. You treated your own species as laboratory material. Yuzuki Blackwell, if I could return to the beginning, I would kill you first, even if it cost me my life!”

Dr. Thorne breathed heavily. His eyes were so red they seemed ready to bleed.

He had lived with integrity all his life. For humanity. For the Empire. For faith. For science.

He had allowed countless students to stand upon his shoulders, glimpse the mysteries of biology, delve deeper, and create something new.

Never had he imagined that his guidance would produce a monster like this.

“Was I wrong?”

Yuzuki tilted her head.

She did not appear to believe she had done anything wrong.

Before Dr. Thorne could challenge her, she began dissecting her own beliefs.

“Humanity is weak and powerless. Even after awakening spirit forms, humans remain helpless before the mighty insectoids. Yet while the insectoids are powerful, most possess very little intelligence…”

“And”

Rowan interrupted with open impatience. He was usually exceptionally polite, except when dealing with someone as deranged as Yuzuki.

Yuzuki appeared unable to sense anyone’s disgust. She smiled and answered immediately.

“That is why human-insectoid fusion is the only correct path. It is evolution itself, a higher form of life!”

“Are you completely insane?”

Harold could no longer tolerate her.

“If you want to die, go somewhere far away and do it alone. Why do you have to ruin the rest of us? Did we say we wanted to evolve? Who asked you to interfere with our lives?”

Yuzuki did not listen. She continued presenting her argument as though no one had spoken.

“Teacher, there is always someone stronger, another sky beyond the sky, another world beyond this one. Our Solara System is isolated in a remote corner. Sooner or later, something will discover us. If it isn’t the insectoids, it will be another advanced species…”

Dr. Thorne frowned.

Rowan and Dr. R fell silent as well.

Atlas Ashford and the others had spent years piloting the Ranger through unknown starfields in search of a way to defeat the insectoids.

They had found traces of other species. Otherwise, they would not have continued traveling outward.

Human technology still imposed hard limits. Starships could leave the Solara System, but they could not travel indefinitely. Supplies alone created an enormous obstacle.

Humanity’s unstable borders made the problem worse.

They had made discoveries.

Not many.

Chapter 468 The Path She chose

The most important involved a civilization-wide migration. A species that had once lived relatively c to humanity appeared to have moved collectively toward the cosmic core.

Atlas and the others had resisted calling that region the center of the cosmos. The name required the admit humanity’s weakness and acknowledge that the Solara System occupied only one neglected co of existence.

In the end, they ace it.
