Chapter 11
I pulled up the next document.
“The renovation,” I said. “Every inch of that house, the design, the materials, the
labor, the finishes. Thirty-eight thousand, four hundred seventy dollars. Every penny
came from me.”
I scrolled through the contracts, the receipts, the bank transfers.
“This is the contract I signed with the contractor. These are the material invoices. These are my payment confirmations.”
Receipt after receipt. Some for a few hundred, some for a couple thousand. They stacked up like evidence at a trial.
At the bottom, the total. $23,487.
“And that’s not all.”
I pulled up another set of documents.
“The mortgage. Twenty-three hundred a month. Twenty-four moi checking account, automatic withdrawal, like clockwork.”
d from my
I displayed the bank statements. Month after month. My name, my account, their
mortgage.
“I worked myself to the bone. No vacations, no nights out, ramen like it was a food group. Said no to everything so I could say yes to them. Because I was a kid who made a promise that I’d pay back every ounce of love they ever gave me.
“And what did I get in return? A bill. An itemized receipt for daring to sleep in my own home. A lecture about how I needed to stop mooching and start giving. A family dinner that came with a side of ‘will she Venmo us or what?””
I paused.
“Two hundred a night to stay in a house I was already paying for.”
The chat detonated.
[WAIT WHAT]

In the middle of the explosion, I kept going.
“When we were kids? They were good to me. I’m not taking that back.”
I paused. “But I wasn’t their daughter. I wasn’t their sister. I was an investment. They gave me crumbs so I’d hand over the whole loaf. Every kind gesture came with interest I didn’t know I was accruing.”
I pulled up the text message. Mom’s ultimatum.
[Fix the house. We’ll post a follow-up. Say it was a misunderstanding
The chat went nuclear.
[ARE YOU KIDDING ME]

“No,” I said. “I don’t want anyone going after them. An eye for an eye just leaves everyone blind.

I met the camera.
“I didn’t come here to start a war. I came here to tell the truth. To get my name back. My dignity back.”
I paused.
“As for them? I’ve already filed. I have a lawyer. We’re going to court for the renovation costs and the mortgage payments I covered. The judge will decide what I’m owed.”
I exhaled.
“After that? We’re done. Separate roads. No more debts, no more favors, no more ‘but
we’re family.’ Just… done.”
I leaned back.
“That’s it. Thank you for listening. Really. Goodnight.”
The verdict came faster than I expected.
Not in court that took a month. But publicly? The internet made up its
four hours.
