[Mansion]
Nathalie idled in the mansion’s pavilion, seated on the concrete railing, casually tossing some feed into the still pond that surrounded it. When she sensed someone’s presence, she couldn’t help but hum slightly.
"Doesn’t this place look just like my home?" Her voice was calm and soothing. "Zorken, Shadow Order... they truly want identical things, don’t they?"
"Me, Naylani, Noel..." she whispered. "As it is amusing, it is repulsive."
The butler who had come to the pavilion stopped a few paces from her. He studied her calm side profile, unfazed by everything currently happening outside the mansion.
"Madam," he called quietly. "Our men sighted Zoren Pierson."
Nathalie’s brows rose as she paused in tossing the feed. After a second, she resumed her activity.
"Is that so?" she hummed. "Capture him. I want him alive."
"He’s headed this way."
"This way?" Her right brow arched even higher as she turned to the butler. "Here?"
The butler nodded. "Yes, Madam. Straight to the entrance."
"Hah." Nathalie rocked her head and chuckled in amusement, the corners of her lips curled into a smirk. "He is always so daunting, then and now. Don’t open fire—let him in."
"Madam." Concern shone in the butler’s eyes upon hearing her order. "If your suspicion is correct and that he also carries the memories of your first life..."
Nathalie chuckled, leaning her back against the pillar, and then looked at the butler. Her dark eyes assessed him from head to toe.
"Gilbert, thanks to you, I was able to avoid Nathaniel’s plans," she remarked. "Had it not been for you and your loyalty, I wouldn’t even know that such a phenomenon happens."
Slowly, she looked away. "Going back in time... to correct what should be fixed. How nice would it be if I also had the ability?"
But alas, Nathalie wasn’t reborn with memories of her past life.
How she found out was because the butler who had served her from the beginning until the end of her first life remembered his past. Thus, he had told Nathalie about everything that had unfolded and who had ended her in her first lifetime.
Initially, she almost couldn’t believe it.
Tonight, however, just proved everything the butler claimed was true. It wasn’t like this was the only time she had gotten proof.
"It’s alright," she whispered and flashed the old butler a smile. "Thanks to you, we were able to stop any fatal blow."
"Complacency is a fatal disease. It kills, Madam."
"Shadow Order’s saying," she nodded. "I know. However, even if that happens, there’s no more code Zoren Pierson could claim."
Her smile stretched as she turned to the pond. "I killed the head of the Shadow Order, Octavia, and we watched her die. If there was anyone who is being complacent just because they carry their memories of the past, that would be Nathaniel... and Zoren Pierson."
The concern in the butler’s eyes shone brighter, but he didn’t refute that anymore. Instead, he lowered his head and huffed faintly.
"I’ll let them know," he said. "And I’ll prepare the table for you."
Nathalie smiled approvingly and watched him go. As she kept her eyes on his back, the smile on her face faded. Looking away, her jaw tightened as she grabbed another feed, only for her hand to tremble.
’Naylani’s son...’ she whispered in her mind, a glint flickering in her eyes. ’What’s your plan now?’
Unlike Zoren, whom she assumed remembered his past, Nathalie could only rely on the butler’s memories. Knowing herself, she surely must’ve kept some details from the butler.
In other words, there might be some crucial information Zoren knew that Nathalie didn’t. And that worried her. After all, at this point, Zoren should’ve realized that Nathalie had also "remembered" the past.
Yet, he was driving to this mansion through the front door.
’What is it?’ she asked herself. ’What does he know that I don’t? Where is this confidence coming from?’
Myriads of questions filled her mind, but there was no answer. Therefore, she could only wait and meet him face to face to get some answers before killing him.
