THUD!
Zoren winced at the crushing weight on him, his back hitting the floor behind the counter. He grunted and clutched the person’s shoulder.
"You—"
"Hehe."
His brows rose, and he opened his eyes at the wicked yet playful giggle that caressed his ears in this gun-infested battleground. His vision was slightly blurry, taking its time to get a clearer look at the face hovering over his.
As soon as he got clarity on who had just jumped on him, his heart clenched. His eyes were wide, almost in disbelief at the person on top of him. The crushing weight was a tell, but somehow, he wanted to be sure.
Did he die just now? Was his mind starting to play tricks on him, of "what could’ve been?"
The corners of her mouth stretched from ear to ear until her teeth were on full display. "Found you."
SMOOCH!
Without a second warning, Penny planted a peck on his lips as if this were the time for some quality time. Then, another kiss on his nose, followed by one on his cheek, until she was just showering him with plenty—PLENTY—more kisses.
On the last one, she grinned and drew her head back.
She didn’t know this, considering she was grinning, beaming. But Zoren just felt his eyes sting, a lump forming in his throat.
"Penny," he breathed out in relief.
"Thought you dead." Her grin stretched, her eyes shining brighter than any explosion. "Got scared for a second."
A low chuckle escaped him; he wanted to tell her the same thing. That he thought she was dead and that he was scared, not just for a second.
"Renren..." she trailed off, only then catching the blood trickling down the side of his head. The smile on her face instantly disappeared. Slowly, it was replaced by a deep frown before she clenched her teeth.
"That mofo—"
Without a second hesitation, Penny jumped off her husband, just in time before she could crush him to death.
"Hey, what did you do— huh? He’s dead." Her face twisted, scrunching up her nose in disbelief.
At the same time, Zoren touched his ribs and winced. No, he hadn’t been shot. The pain came from Penny’s tackle, and her weight had simply pressed on him. Still, he reached out to the counter’s edge and pushed himself up.
When Zoren got back on his feet, he turned his head. Coming from the yard stood Angel and Mark; he believed they were with Penny, since that was where Penny had jumped from. Moving his gaze to the other entrance within the manor, his brows rose.
There, stood Charles and Slater. And the way Charles put down his rifle told him he was the one who shot the man in the corner.
All these people... they did come for him.
After a huff, Charles put down his gun and marched to where they were.
"Penny!" Charles shouted, his steps wide. Before she could react, he pulled her into his arms and hugged his daughter tightly.
