Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Destroying Him

SOPHIA’S POV

When I arrived at the hospital early the next morning there were whispers and some nurses were pointing fingers at me.

At first I thought news of the incident with Professor Rio had traveled.

But after I changed into my scrubs and walked into the operating room, some of the doctors stopped talking.

Someone stopped mid-sentence. I heard another whisper trail off. I looked up and caught a few people watching me, then quickly looking away.

My wolf felt uneasy inside me. She could sense tension. Something was wrong.

“Morning, Sophia,” one surgeon finally greeted me, forcing a smile.

“Morning,” I replied.

I told myself I was imagining things. I had consultations scheduled. I didn’t have time to worry about hospital gossip.

During morning rounds, I still had that strange feeling followed me. Nurses stood in small groups, whispering. When I approached, they fell silent.

One of them gave me a look filled with pity. Another avoided my eyes completely. My wolf became even more restless.

During a chart review, a young resident approached me hesitantly.

“Dr. Sophia,” she said quietly, “is it true about Dr. Chen?”

I started to panic when I heard those words.

“What about Dr. Chen?” I asked.

Before she could answer, a senior nurse grabbed her arm.

“We need you,” the nurse said, pulling her away.

The head nurse looked at me with sad eyes and said nothing.

Something was very wrong.

I checked the OR schedule on my tablet. My heart skipped. Lance’s name was gone. He was supposed to assist me with a lab consultation. His name had been replaced by another doctor. There was no explanation given for this. I was in shock.

What was going on?

“What?” I whispered.

I opened the hospital directory. Lance’s extension was still active. I stepped into an empty conference room and called his extension. It rang and rang.

No answer.

I tried his cell phone but it went straight to voicemail.

“Lance, it’s Sophia,” I said. “Call me back when you get this.”

I hung up, feeling my throat close up. Lance always answered, always.

Throughout the morning, I moved from patient to patient. I smiled when I needed to. I asked the right questions. But my thoughts kept drifting.

Where was Lance?

Between consultations, I checked my phone. Still, nothing.

At lunch, I went to the cafeteria, hoping to hear something. I stood near the counter when two residents at a nearby table spoke openly.

“Did you hear?” one said. “Dr. Chen was terminated this morning.”

My coffee cup froze halfway to my lips.

“Effective immediately,” the other replied. “Security escorted him out.”

My heart started pounding so hard it hurt.

Terminated? Lance?

I set the cup down and walked straight to HR.
