Chapter 93: Chapter 93 Mommy I Miss You

SOPHIA’S POV

The hospital room was quiet. The only sounds came from the beep of monitors. Lance sat in the bed, looking weak.

Both his hands were wrapped in thick bandages. His face was pale. He had dark circles under his eyes from pain and lack of sleep. But when he saw me walk in, he managed a small smile.

"Sophia," he said. "I heard you flew all the way here."

I pulled a chair up to his bedside, forcing a small smile. The sight of him made my chest ache but I didn’t show it.

“Hey” I said. "How are your hands?"

"Better than expected." He lifted them slightly, wincing. "The breaks were bad, but the surgeons here say I might regain seventy to eighty percent function with extensive therapy. Maybe enough to operate again with assistance."

"That’s good," I said, feeling a bit relieved. "That’s really good."

"Yeah." He looked down at his bandaged hands. "Could’ve been worse. Simon’s guys could’ve destroyed them completely. I think they held back just enough to keep me functional but scared."

My wolf snarled at the mention of Simon’s name. I felt guilty. The guilt I felt was so strong that tears burned my eyes again. This was all my fault.

"Lance, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault-" I sobbed

"Stop." His voice was firm. "We’ve been through this. You didn’t do this to me. Simon did. He made his own choice to be a vindictive bastard."

I took a shaky breath. "Damien came to see me at the resort."

Lance’s expression went dark "Did he hurt you?"

"No. He... he wants something from you."

I explained everything - about Simon’s mother’s stroke, about the complex surgery she needed, about how Lance was apparently one of the only surgeons who could perform it successfully. I told him about Damien’s threats against my family, though I made it clear I’d refused to pressure Lance in any way.

When I finished, Lance was quiet for a long time. His wolf’s scent was filled with anger and something else - maybe sadness.

"I knew this would happen," he finally said.

I was confused "What do you mean?"

"Mrs. Stone - Simon’s mother. She came to see me about six months ago complaining of severe headaches and dizzy spells. I recommended she get immediate brain scans and possible hospitalization for observation. But Simon overruled me. He said I was being dramatic, that his mother just needed rest and stress relief."

"He ignored your medical advice?"

"Worse. He spread rumors that I was trying to scam his family by recommending unnecessary procedures. That’s part of why some people were willing to believe the fraud allegations against me." Lance chuckled bitterly "I told him then that if his mother didn’t get proper care, she’d likely have a major stroke within a year. Looks like I was right."

"So he caused this," I said quietly. "His mother is dying because he ignored your warnings."

"And now he needs me to fix his mistake." Lance shook his head. "The irony is almost funny....almost."

We sat in silence for a moment. The mate bond was pulling at me, making my wolf restless. She could feel Damien’s anxiety even from here, could sense his desperation but I pushed the feeling away.

"Lance," I said carefully. "I need you to know something. Whatever you decide about this surgery, I support you completely. You don’t owe Simon anything. This your choice and yours alone."

He looked at me with those kind eyes. "What do you want me to do?"

"I don’t know," I admitted. "Part of me wants you to refuse but another part of me..." I trailed off.

"Another part of you remembers that you’re a doctor too," Lance finished. "That we took an oath to save lives regardless of who the patient is or what their family has done."

Tears burned in my eyes again and this time, a tear slipped free. "I have no right to ask anything of you after what you’ve been through. But if you do this surgery, it should be because it’s the right thing to do, not because Damien threatened me. Not because you feel obligated. Only if you truly believe it’s what a doctor should do."

Lance was quiet again, studying his bandaged hands. "Can I think about it?"

"Of course. Take all the time you need."

"Sophia?" He looked up at me. "If I do this surgery and something goes wrong, they’ll blame me. You know that, right? They’ll say I sabotaged it on purpose, that I wanted revenge."
