Grace
I paused, startled, and turned around to see Genesis standing there, her sharp gaze locked on Jackson. My heart skipped a beat. For a split second, I’d thought it was Apollo, they had the same tone, and commanding presence, but then again, Apollo’s voice didn’t sound like a woman’s.
Maybe it was because he’d saved me so many times that I’d started mistaking everyone for him. Even last time, I mistook someone else for him. God, I really needed to get my head straight.
Genesis’s eyes flicked from Jackson to where his hand rested. Her voice came out calm but dangerously low. “I’ll repeat myself again. Get your filthy hands off her right now, or I’ll take it off myself. And I’ll be rough, so you decide.”
Jackson stiffened, swallowing hard before slowly removing his hand. He raised both palms in surrender, forcing a smile. “I think you’re misunderstanding something, ma’am. Miss Grace and I were just talking. There’s nothing to be worried about, right, Miss Grace?” He turned to me, his smile strained.
I frowned, rubbing my arm where his hand had been, then looked at Genesis. Her expression was tight with concern and anger.
I knew that if I made this a bigger deal, things would only get more complicated. Jackson was an asshole, but I didn’t want him to lose his job because of me.
“I’m okay,” I said. “You don’t have to worry. If he’d tried anything, I would’ve punched the daylight out of him. I can protect myself. Next time he pulls something like that, he’ll regret it.”
Jackson’s face fell, his fake smile faltering.
Genesis’s lips twitched, the hint of a smirk breaking through for a brief second. Then her expression hardened again as she turned to Jackson. “Get lost.”
“R–right,” he muttered, nodding quickly before hurrying away.
When he was gone, Genesis stepped closer, her heels clicking softly against the floor as she stopped in front of me. “Are you okay, Grace?”
I nodded, still feeling awkward. Having the vice president of the company standing there, worried about me, felt strange. I knew it was probably because of my connection with Apollo, but still, I wasn’t used to powerful people showing me kindness. In my experience, people like that always wanted something in return. Charles’s family had been like that. So had mine.
Even Apollo, he was different, but sometimes too kind. So kind it made me question his motives. If all he wanted was sex, that would’ve been easier to understand. But some of the things he did were confusing.
Genesis’s lips curved into a smile. “That’s good. And don’t worry about him, I’ll make sure he doesn’t bother you again.”
There was a dangerous glint in her eyes, one that sent a chill down my spine.
Why did that sound terrifying?

I forced a small laugh, though it came out a little shaky. “Uh, thank you.”
She just kept smiling, like a predator pretending to be patient.
Maybe I was being delusional, but deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Genesis had more to do with the sudden change around me than I realized. The gossip had stopped. No more whispers behind my back, no one testing boundaries. And somehow, every time I turned around, Genesis was there.
Everywhere I went, she appeared one way or another.
When I passed through the hallway, she was walking by with her assistant. When I ate lunch in the cafetería with Danielle and the boys, she was there too, sitting at a table across the room, her eyes occasionally flicking to me like a hawk keeping watch.
It couldn’t be a coincidence, could it?
But then again, she was a busy woman. Why would she waste her time keeping tabs on someone like me?
I lowered my head slightly. “Thank you again, Miss Genesis. I will take my leave and won’t waste your time anymore.”
I was about to step past her when she said, “Wait.”
I stopped and looked up just as she moved closer, standing right in front of me.
“Yes?”
“I was actually looking for you,” she said.
I pointed at myself. “You were looking for me?”
For a moment,
she studied me with a faint smile. “Actually, I have a job. And you seem like the perfect person to get it done. Can you help me with it? It’s a little difficult.”
I frowned slightly. A difficult job?
I’d heard enough stories about Genesis to know she wasn’t the type to need help. She was intelligent, quick, and precise. If she couldn’t do something, I doubted I could even come close. But as if reading my mind, Genesis tilted her head, “Trust me, you’re the perfect person for this.”
Her voice was honeyed, and persuasive, but there was something behind it that made me feel like saying no wasn’t really an option.
“Will you please help me?”
I hesitated for a second, but then nodded. “Of course, Miss Genesis.”
Her smile widened, satisfied. “Perfect.”
Before I could react, she placed a hand gently around my neck. “Let’s go.”

management, maybe a crisis briefing. You know, the usual PR stuff.
What I didn’t expect was this.
Standing in front of a hospital room door.
I stared through the small rectangular window, my hand hovering over the metal handle. Inside, a little girl sat on the bed, her back turned toward me. Her thin shoulders were hunched, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees as she faced the window.
She wasn’t moving.
Even without seeing her face, I could feel her sadness. Something deep inside me ached for her.
Behind me, Genesis leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching me quietly. When she noticed the look on my face, she smiled.
“I told you, you’re the best one for this job.
I turned to her, still processing the sight of the girl. “Who is she?”
“She’s the real victim from the celebrity case, the girl whose parents let her get into that accident, to scam Apollo.”
“What?” My voice came out lower than I expected. “She’s that girl?”
Genesis nodded.
I looked back through the window again. The girl hadn’t moved, or turned her head. The sunlight filtered through the blinds, outlining her small frame. She looked so fragile, and lost.
“She woke up two days ago,” Genesis continued. “But by then, her parents were already dead.”
I froze. “Dead?”
“Yeah, the news isn’t public yet, but they died a few days ago. We underestimated how far this thing would go.”
“Is that why Apollo traveled?” I asked quietly.
Genesis nodded again. “He got a tip about it. Our men have been protecting the girl ever since, but she hasn’t eaten or spoken a word. The doctors have been keeping her stable with IV nutrition, but if she doesn’t start eating soon, she might not make it. And worse, if we don’t find whoever’s behind this, she could be next.”
“I see,” I said, my hand tightening around the door handle.
“I’m sorry for dragging you into this, Grace. Apollo would kill me if he knew I brought you here, but I also know you have a way of reaching people. You’ve done it before with him, and you can do it again. Besides, I’m worried. The people connected to Apollo might be next. Someone’s out to get him, and if they find out about you, you could be in danger.”
I didn’t say anything at first, but I’d already made up my mind. I would find the scumbag who’d done this, not because I was afraid for myself, but because they’d put an innocent girl through unbearable pain and taken everything from her. And above all, I wanted to protect Apollo.
