Grace
My body was humming from the inside out. Every inch of me felt heavy, and weak. My throat was dry, and even breathing fell hard. I tried to move but the moment I did, agarp ache crawled through my muscles. It was useless. I couldn’t even lift a finger without feeling like my body was punishing me for it.
1 sighed softly, trying to ignore the pain and the fever burning beneath my skin. Moonlight brushed my face, but I lacked the strength to tum away or pull the blanket over my eyes, I just lay there, drained, too exhausted to care about anything.
Just as I was about to drift back into sleep, a knock echoed at my door.
“Aunt Grace?”
I didn’t need to open my eyes to know it was Lucas. His voice was always soft in the mornings, like he didn’t want to wake the whole house.
When I didn’t answer, the door opened. Small footsteps pattered across the floor, and a second later, the bed dipped as he climbed up. His little hand touched my arm, tapping gently.
“Aunt Grace,” he called again. “Please wake up. It’s evening, dinner’s ready. You skipped breakfast. Mom said I should wake you. You have to eat something.”
I whined softly, forcing my eyes open. Even blinking felt like pain. Lucas was staring at me, brows furrowed, confusion etched across his young face. He tapped my arm again.
“Aunt Grace?”
I tried to smile, but my voice cracked painfully. “I–I’ll be okay, Lucas. I’ll come for dinner later.”
He frowned. “Why?”
“I’m not hungry,” I whispered.
Lucas blinked. “But Daddy’s food is nice. You didn’t eat this morning while Mom and Dad were at work. You’ll get hungry.”
“I’m okay. Just give me a few minutes. I’ll eat later.”
Lucas didn’t look convinced. His little nose scrunched, and he stared at me like he didn’t believe a word I said. But after a moment, he leaned forward and pressed a small kiss to my forehead.
“Okay,” he whispered.
He slid off the bed, climbed down with effort, and carefully closed the door behind him.
As soon as he left. My whole body ached, it felt like the past few days had pushed me past my limits, and now it was catching up. Sweat clung to my forehead, and my body trembled.
I squeezed my eyes shut, I didn’t want to worry anyone. Eleanor and Wyatt already had their hands full with Lucas, Liana, and the restaurant. They didn’t need me adding to their stress. I could handle this. I always handled it.
It wouldn’t be the first time I got sick and had no one to take care of me.
Still, a small part of me ached. It would’ve been nice to have a mother who rushed to my side, who held me, who stayed until I felt better. I used to watch my classmates get that kind of love from their mothers, even for something as simple as a cold. For me, that warmth had never existed.
I closed my eyes again, hoping sleep would numb the ache.

aww pod Wyatt, she is burning,”
す
Alment immediately, another hand touched my head. Wyatt’s voice followed. “She’s really burning. We need to tak het to the hospital”
“Mom, Dad, is At Grace okay? Is she sick? Will she be okay?” Liana’s small voice trembled.
Lucas’s voice followed right after. “She looks really pale. Mommy.”
Kleanor answered them quickly, trying to sound reassuring even though she was two seconds from panicking, ” Don’t worry, kids, We’ll take her to the hospital right now
1 groaned and finally spoke, my voice coming out weak. “You guys are being dramatic. I’m not going to die.”
All of them turned toward me at once. Slowly, I forced my eyes open, and instantly regretted it. Four worried faces hovered over me, and the kids had tears pooling in their eyes like I was on my deathbed. Eleanor and Wyatt looked equally distressed.
Eleanor sat on the edge of the bed and grabbed my hand. “Grace, are you okay? How are you feeling?”
1 nodded, “I am. I just need rest. It’s nothing.”
“Nothing, my foot!” Eleanor snapped, her face flushed with worry. “Do you see how you look? You’re burning up! Why didn’t you say anything? I knew something was wrong when you skipped dinner and went straight to bed last night, but I didn’t think you were sick! You should’ve told me. What if something had happened to you?”
Despite her anger, I couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Because I knew you’d react like this. You always overreact when I’m sick. It’s just a fever from being overworked. It’ll pass. And besides, it’s late. I don’t need to go to the hospital.”
Eleanor opened her mouth to argue again, but Wyatt placed a hand on her shoulder before she could explode.
“If we try to take her to the hospital,” he said gently, “she won’t go. Right, Grace?”
I gave him a small nod.
“Fine,” Wyatt continued.
“Fine?” Eleanor whipped toward him. “Wyatt, she is sick!”
“Grace is right. It’s late. If we drive to the hospital, her condition might worsen.”
“But-” Eleanor started again.
Wyatt squeezed her shoulder lightly. “I’ll call my friend. He’s a doctor. He’ll come check on her and tell us what to do. Don’t worry, sweetheart. Grace is safe, she just needs care.”
Eleanor deflated slightly, but she didn’t let go of my hand. She just sat there, staring at me like she was trying to memorize every breath I took.
Wyatt cleared his throat softly and said, “Come on, kids. Let’s go make something light for your aunt. She can’t eat the food we made earlier.”
Liana and Lucas hesitated, both of them clearly wanting to stay glued to my side, but eventually they followed Wyatt out of the room. The door closed gently behind them, leaving only me and Eleanor in the room.
I looked at her still hovering over me, eyes filled with worry, and sighed. I shifted a little to the side, lifted my arm, and patted the space beside me. “Here you go.”

My body stilled, and I hugged her tighter before I whispered, “Yes,”
She smiled, I could feel it in the way her arms squeezed around me. “I’m so proud of you, Grace. No matter what happens, just remember we’re here for you. All of us are rooting for you. After everything you’ve been through, you deserve a happy ending.”
Thank you, Eleanor.
