Why did I have to die?
Grace
She bit her lip hard enough to draw blood before finally lowering her hand.
I exhaled quietly in relief, but it did not last.
“It’s all your fault!” she suddenly screamed, her composure shattering completely. “You caused everything. You took everything from me. I was supposed to be Apollo’s woman. The Jones were supposed to be my family. That life was mine!”
Her eyes looked wild, almost detached from reality. “You stole it. You stole everything from me!”
Before I could brace myself, she lunged forward.
The chair I was tied to tipped backward violently as she grabbed me, and we both crashed onto the cold concrete floor. The impact knocked the air from my lungs, and before I could even process the fall, she climbed on top of me.
Her hands wrapped tightly around my neck. And a manic smile stretched across her face as she began to squeeze.
I gasped, instinctively trying to twist away, but my hands were still bound behind me, leaving me defenseless beneath her weight. I tried to buck my body, to throw her off balance, but she pressed down harder, her grip tightening as if she wanted to crush the life out of me with her bare hands.
Air stopped reaching my lungs.
My vision blurred at the edges as panic finally surged through me. I tried to pry her fingers away, but I couldn’t move my arms properly. My legs kicked uselessly beneath her.
She squeezed harder.
My throat burned.
No. Not like this. Not when I had so much to go back to.
“Die! Die! Die!” Katherine screamed hysterically, her fingers digging deeper into my throat as if she could crush my windpipe.‘ She promised me that once you die, I’ll have everything back! So die! Just die!”

Her face was twisted beyond recognition, her eyes wide and unhinged, spit flying from her mouth as she shrieked those words over and over again like a broken record. The pressure on my neck tightened until bright spots began dancing in my vision, and no matter how hard I tried to inhale, nothing came in. My lungs burned desperately, fighting for air that wasn’t there.
So this is how it ends?
The thought flashed faintly through my fading consciousness, and the only thing louder than the pounding in my head was the desperate cry in my heart.
Not my baby.
Just when I felt my strength slipping completely, a loud sound rang behind Katherine.
Bang!
A hard object slammed violently against Katherine’s head. She let out a sharp, pained scream as her grip loosened instantly, her body jerking to the side before she was shoved off me.
I collapsed flat against the cold concrete, coughing violently as I greedily dragged air into my lungs, each breath sharp and painful but precious beyond words. My chest rose and fell rapidly as if I had been drowning and had just barely broken through
the surface of the water.
“Grace! Are you okay?”

I blinked up through blurred vision, still gasping, and saw a familiar figure standing over me.
I froze.
“R–River?” I croaked weakly, my voice raw from being strangled. “What are you doing here?”
Relief flooded his expression as he crouched down beside me. “I’ll explain later,” he said quickly, his voice urgent. “We have to get out of here before she gets up.”
He slid an arm around my shoulders and helped me sit up. I didn’t hesitate, or question him. River had always been on my side. Even when he appeared and disappeared without explanation, I had never once felt threatened by him.
He moved behind me swiftly and untied the ropes binding my wrists. The sudden freedom made my arms tingle painfully as blood rushed back into them. He helped me to my feet, steadying me when I swayed slightly.
“We need to move,” he said.
I nodded, placing one protective hand over my stomach without even thinking about it.
We had barely taken a step when I heard a sharp, uneven laugh behind us.
Katherine staggered upright, one hand clutching the back of her bleeding head. Blood trickled down the side of her face, staining her hoodie, but the madness in her eyes had not faded.
In her other hand was a knife.
She must have hidden it inside her hoodie.
“You’re not going anywhere!” she screamed hoarsely, raising the blade toward us. “You’re not going anywhere until I kill that bitch! The only way to get my life back is to kill her, and I will do it!”
She charged at me, her movements reckless and fueled by desperation.
My body reacted instantly. I stepped back and covered my stomach with both hands, instinct overpowering everything else. River moved faster. He stepped in front of me without hesitation, shielding me completely with his body.
Katherine lifted the knife high, and a deafening gunshot split the air. The sound echoed violently through the empty warehouse, ringing in my ears.
