You belong to me!
Apollo
She flinched at my words, her eyes widening in shock as though she genuinely had not expected me to treat her this way, as though somewhere in her deluded mind she still believed she held a piece of the man I used to be. But I did not spare her another glance.
She tried to stumble toward me despite the blood running down her arm, but the officers behind her reacted immediately and forced her down to her knees, pinning her arms behind her back while she screamed my name like it still meant something to
It did not.
The only name that mattered to me in that moment was Grace.
I turned to her instantly, and when our eyes met, I saw that she was about to say something, probably to reassure me again like she always did, and to tell me she was fine even after everything she had endured.
I did not let her speak.
I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around her waist without hesitation, pulling her against me so tightly that it felt as though I was afraid she would disappear if I loosened my hold even slightly. I buried my face in her hair and breathed her in deeply, holding her like she was the air my lungs required to function.
She froze in my arms, clearly not expecting that reaction from me, her hands hovering awkwardly in the air as she whispered, Apollo-”
I tightened my hold, one arm locked firmly around her waist while my other hand moved up to cradle the back of her head protectively.
“Thank you,” I murmured, my voice lower than usual, rougher. “Thank you for not leaving me, Grace. If you had left me… 1 would have been nothing. Thank you for waiting for me.”
There was a pause before her arms slowly wrapped around me in return, her body finally relaxing into mine. I felt her smile faintly against my chest, and then I felt something warm soak through my shirt.
It took me a second to realize it was tears. She hugged me tighter and said softly, “Thank you for coming for us, Apollo. Thank you for abandoning everything for us.”

“Coming for you wasn’t abandoning anything. It was essential.” I pulled back slightly to look at her face. “And I didn’t come for River but it’s good to see River still breathing. That idiot refuses to die.”
She let out a small chuckle at that, but then she shook her head. “No… it’s not River.”
I frowned slightly and raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something important, something that made her eyes shine with a softness I did not fully understand, but before she could speak, her gaze shifted over my shoulder. And her expression changed instantly
The smile vanished. Her face went pale.
I heard Sarah’s voice from behind me, hysterical and unhinged. “If I can’t have you, Apollo, then nobody will! I’ll make sure nobody has you! You belong to me!”
Everything happened too fast. Before I could even turn around properly, Grace grabbed the collar of my shirt and shoved me
hard to the side.
“Grace-”
I barely regained my balance when the sound tore through the warehouse.

A gunshot.
For a second, it felt like time stopped, the air froze. Every person in the room stood still, eyes wide, breath held, as though
reality itself had shattered and no one knew how to move inside the fragments.
I turned back to her, and I saw the way her body jerked. The way her eyes widened in shock. The way her hand moved instinctively to her stomach, and realization of what just happened dawned on me.
Grace has been shot. 3
