Chapter 116

Nicolai doesn’t show his outrage when the council asks what, if anything, we’d like to present. He doesn’t pound the table or posture or make this about dominance. He just quietly opens a folder.
And I know him well enough by now to know that’s when he’s at his most dangerous. From the look on his face, Jaxon does too.
“My estate’s records are available to the council.” His voice is calm. Formal. The voice of someone who’s handled hostile rooms before and found them amusing. “Staff can be questioned regarding Skye’s arrival date and the circumstances of her stay. Dr. Chernov, who has managed her prenatal care since she arrived here, can provide documentation of the pregnancy timeline and gestational development.” 1
He meets Jaxon’s eyes across the table.
“DNA testing of the child after birth will prove paternity conclusively. We will submit to it voluntarily. I’ll put that in writing now if the council would like.”
He slides a prepared document toward Elder Patricia. She looks at it then looks at Jaxon who looks at the document too.
The offer is the argument. A man hiding an affair doesn’t volunteer DNA testing of the child in question. A man with nothing to hide walks into the room with the paperwork already drafted.
Something goes out of Jaxon’s posture. Not dramatically. Just a quiet deflation. The last air leaving him. He knows. He knew before he came. And now he’s sitting across from the evidence of his own mistake.
Elder Patricia calls a recess and the elders step into the hallway. Nicolai touches my hand briefly under the table- just enough contact to remind me he’s there-then excuses himself to speak with Gianna at the far end of the room. But I’m more interested in the hallway conversation that reaches me clearly through the partially open
door.
Elder Patricia’s voice is stripped of all diplomacy. “Alpha Vale. I want to be direct with you. This inquiry, built on evidence submitted by a woman already found to have committed fraud in matters directly related to your former mate, reflects very poorly on your judgment. The photographs are meaningless. The timeline of the pregnancy makes the accusation mathematically implausible.” A pause. “If you proceed further without substantial new evidence, the council will formally consider sanctions against you for abuse of inquiry proceedings. Do you understand?”
A heavy silence fills the space following her words. Then Jaxon relents, “Yes.”
“Good.” She snaps.
They return and within ten minutes, the inquiry has collapsed completely. Elder Graham examines the photographs and formally notes they demonstrate nothing beyond proximity. Elder Patricia reviews Dr. Chernov’s timeline documentation and formally notes the accusation is not supported by the gestational record. Gianna says very little because very little needs to be said.
Jaxon has no leg to stand on. And he knows it. He knew it before he ever left Ironwood to pursue this farce.
As the elders gather their materials to leave, Elder Patricia pauses at the door and looks at me-really looks at me, with something that isn’t quite an apology because apology isn’t in her formal vocabulary.
“Luna Vale.” A nod.

I walk away before he can respond. I don’t look back. I don’t have to. He knows I’m right.
And I’ve run out of anything left to say about it.
