Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 136

Chapter 136

Jaxon

My conversation with Noah plays on a loop in my head until I’m dizzy with it. I’ve already been on the road for an hour when I finally decide enough is enough and make a decision. And I don’t let myself think about it long enough to change my mind. I just turn the car around.

My first call is to Noah, letting him know I won’t be coming home today after all. Then I dial the Woolf estate to let them know I’m on my way back, hoping some advance notice rather than just reappearing on their doorstep will work in my favor.

When I arrive, Skye is in the sitting room nursing our son. She looks up from the feeding with a mix of curiosity and a slight tinge of embarrassment. She looks gorgeous like this and I almost forget what I’m doing here.

When I finally find my voice, I start to blurt an excuse. “I forgot my-” I stop myself before I can finish the fie.” No I didn’t. I have a question.”

Skye settles Benji more comfortably and gives me her full attention. “Okay.”

I sit down across from her so I can watch her face as we talk. “The estate has west wing rooms that are empty,” I say. “I’ve noticed.”

Something careful crosses Skye’s face but she doesn’t comment.

“I want to propose-and I want you to know this is a proposal, not a request, and I will hear no as an answer- staying here. In the west wing. My own space, completely separate, not in your rooms or in Nicolai’s. Noah can run Ironwood from there. I can help remotely.” I look at her. “I want to be in the house when Benji wakes up. I want to be there for the 3 AM things. I want to be his father every day, not the one who visits.”

Skye is very still. I’m pretty sure she’s the one who’s speechless now, but that works in my favor. So I keep going.

“I know what I’m asking,” I continue. “I know that this is Nicolai’s home and I know the two of you are… together. I know what it would mean to be under the same roof as both of you. I’m not asking for more than what I’ve described. Just-proximity to my son.”

I wait. Skye looks at Benji then at me. Back and forth like she’s processing my request from both our points of view.

“How long have you been thinking about this?” She finally asks, and I’m not sure if she genuinely wants to know or she’s just buying time.

“A while. More seriously in the last few days. He’s got me wrapped around his little finger and it’s getting harder and harder to let go.”

The corner of her mouth moves. Not quite a smile. “He does that.”

“I know.” I pause. “Skye-I need you to tell me honestly if this is something you could live with. Because if it’s not -if it would make your life harder, make you feel crowded or watched or managed-then the answer is no and I accept that.”

She’s quiet for long enough that I think she’s going to say the no I told her I’d accept.

“I’d need to talk to Nicolai,” she says finally.

“Obviously. Yes.” I let out the breath I was holding. That’s not a “no.”

“And there would have to be clear terms. Clear expectations about space and schedules and-” She takes a breath.

Whatever you need. Whatever makes it work.” I jump in.

She looks at me steadily. The same look she’s been giving me for months-the one that’s looking for the angle, the want underneath the request. “Is this just about Benji?”

I hold her gaze urging her to see the truth in it.

“Yes,” I promise her. “It’s just about Benji.”

She nods and I can see in her eyes she believes me. “Let me talk to Nicolai,” she says.

I’m driving back to the hotel-my home away from home these days-when Noah calls back.

“What happened? I’m dying from the suspense here. You call me to say your not coming home then just leave hanging?”

“That’s great, Jax. I hope it works out for you. And you know I’ll take care of things here.” he says finally.

“Do you think I can do it?” I ask, genuinely interested in his opinion. “Do you think it will be enough? Just being Benji’s dad?”

“I don’t know.” He answers truthfully. “But it’s more than you had last month.”
