Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 141

Chapter 141

Nicolai

Skye takes Benji for his morning routine while I head to the kitchen to start on breakfast. That’s where Dimitri finds me, already dressed and ready for the day and that damn cheerful grin of his plastered on his face.

He reads my face over coffee with the accuracy fifteen years of friendship provides. His expression does the thing it does when he’s arrived at a conclusion. “About damn time,” he crows.

“Good morning to you too.” I grunt in reply.

“How is she?”

“Good.” I think about the specific quality of her sleeping. The exhale when I agreed about Jaxon. The morning light. “Real.”

“You’re sure?”

I look him in the eye and answer earnestly, “I have never been more sure of anything.”

Dimitri nods. Drinks his coffee. Then, because he’s been building toward it: “The bond.”

“I know, Dimitri.” I know he’s just looking out for me but sometimes he takes it too far.

“She needs to decide about it. Soon.” He sets his cup down. “Not because you need the security-I know you don’t. But because she deserves to be free of the thing that keeps pulling her somewhere she’s not choosing to go.”

I’ve been thinking about this since last night. The bond is the last piece of the old life that she didn’t actively put there. Everything else-leaving Ironwood, the divorce, coming here, choosing me, letting Jaxon move in-those are decisions she made. Things she owns.

The bond happened to her. It formed the night of her shifting party and she’s carried it through three years of damage and a divorce and a pregnancy and building something new, and it still exists as a current beneath everything, connecting her to a man she’s not choosing.

She deserves to choose what she’s connected to.

“She’s thinking about it,” I divulge.

“Good. Don’t pressure her.” He warns, like a parent giving advice to their son about his first girlfriend.

“I’m not.” I roll my eyes. “I asked her last night and immediately said it’s her timeline. No pressure”

Dimitri pretends to consider this. “I’m impressed. What happened to our growly Alpha who only communicated in grunted commands?”

“You’re insufferable,” I scowl at him.

“I’m accurate. Different thing.” He deadpans, then walks away.

That evening I’m on the terrace. The grounds are settling into dusk, the gardens going soft and grey in the fading light. I hear Skye before I see her-the sound of her step, which I know the way I know Benji’s specific cries. She’s gotten better sleep. Her step has the quality of someone who is vibrant and alive in their body rather than just moving through space.

She comes to stand beside me at the railing. “Can I ask you something?”

“Okay.” My voice cracks on the word, choked with emotion.

“And Jaxon-when it happens, he’ll feel it. When the bond severs. He should know before it happens.”

“I agree.” Not that he deserves the warning, but Skye would feel guilty if she didn’t and I can’t allow that.

“I’ll tell him,” she nods to herself, like she’s affirming her decision. “That’s mine to do.”

We stand together in the fading light. Below us, through the baby monitor she carries everywhere now, Benji makes a sound that means he’s starting to think about dinner. Not demanding yet. Just-informing. Skye smiles at the monitor. The specific smile she has for him that she doesn’t know she makes. It’s adorable.

“He’s going to call you something,” she says. “Eventually. When he has words. Have you thought about what you’d want it to be?”

I look at the grounds. At the estate that’s been in my family for three generations and has never once been a home the way it is right now.

“Whatever he chooses,” I say. “Whatever he reaches for when he reaches for me.”

Skye nods. Her hand finds mine on the railing. We wait for Benji to decide it’s time for dinner.

Life has never been more beautiful.
