Grandma Rose’s hand tightens around mine.
“Tell me everything,” she says quietly. “From the beginning.”
So I do.
I tell her about Cassandra’s return over a month ago, how no one told me she was back. How I walked into Jaxon’s office expecting to tell him about the pregnancy-though I don’t mention that part, can’t risk anyone knowing yet –and found my sister in his arms instead.
I tell her about Liam. About Cassandra’s claim that he’s Jaxon’s son, conceived before our mating but kept secre all these years. About how Jaxon named him heir without hesitation, without even discussing it with me first.
“His heir,” Grandma Rose murmurs, her expression darkening. “Before even knowing if you could give him children.”
I don’t correct her assumption. Let her think I’m barren. It’s easier than explaining the truth.
I tell her about the Green Springs trip, about being forced to watch them play family while I sat on the sidelines. About the car breaking down, about Liam’s convenient headache, about being left behind in the storm.
“Three hours I waited,” I say, my voice steady even as the memory makes my chest tight. “Three hours in a dead car while the temperature dropped and the storm closed in. By the time I realized no one was coming, it was almost too late.”
Grandma Rose’s face has gone pale. “Three hours? Skye, you could have died
“I almost did.” I look down at our joined hands. “I ran in the storm. I don’t even remember most of it-just the cold, and my wolf trying to keep me conscious, and the light from the patrol station right before I collapsed.”
“And Jaxon?” Her voice is sharp now, angry in a way I’ve rarely heard from her. “What did he say when he found out?”
“He blamed me for staying in the hospital too long. Said I was making him look bad on purpose, that I should have been stronger, recovered faster.” The words taste bitter. “He thinks I’m trying to embarrass him and Cassandra with the rumors.”
“That boy.” Grandma Rose releases my hand and stands, pacing to the window. For a long moment, she just stares out at the dark gardens, her shoulders rigid. When she speaks again, her voice trembles with fury. “He failed you by leaving you in that storm. Do you understand that, Skye? He failed you completely.”
She turns back to me, and I see tears in her eyes.
“Come here, dear.”
I stand and she pulls me into her arms, holding me tight against her chest. She smells like lavender and old books, comforting and familiar. For a moment, I let myself be small again. Let myself be held.
“You must be feeling so wronged,” she murmurs into my hair. “And you have every right to be. Every right. I’ll talk to him, Skye. I’ll make him understand what he’s done.”
Her support should make me feel better. It should ease some of the weight pressing down on my chest.
But she hasn’t said anything about the divorce.

I pull back slightly, searching her face. “Granny-”
“I’ll talk to him,” she repeats, more firmly this time. “I’ll make sure he knows this behavior is unacceptable. That he owes you an apology and far better treatment than this.”
She’s not going to support the divorce.
The realization settles over me like a heavy blanket. Grandma Rose-kind, warm, supportive Grandma Rose- loves me. I don’t doubt that. But she won’t support me leaving her grandson. Won’t help me break a bond that the entire pack sees as sacred.
Because what could possibly justify breaking a fated mate bond?
I’m Jaxon’s true mate, recognized by the universe itself. I’m a good wife-I’ve tried so hard to be a good wife. I’m, a respected Luna, one who’s earned the pack’s loyalty through years of service and dedication. What scandal could possibly be severe enough to dissolve such a bond?
Rumors would fly. Stories would spread across pack territories about the Vale Alpha’s failed mating, about their Luna walking away, about weakness at the highest levels of leadership. It would damage Jaxon’s reputation, certainly. But it would destroy mine.
And my father’s pack-small as it is-would be implicated too. It’s not nothing. The connection between our packs, forged through my mating with Jaxon, carries political weight. Breaking that connection wouldn’t just hurt Jaxon’s pack. It would hurt both of them. Their images. Their power. Their honor.
Jaxon could claim I was barren. He could set me aside and choose another mate, and no one would question it. An Alpha needs heirs, after all. That would be acceptable. Expected, even.
But a divorce? On equal terms? With me walking away by my own choice, asserting my own agency?
