Chapter 24

Skye

Diana doesn’t respond, just stares back at me with an unreadable expression. And it occurs to me that maybe this isn’t about me at all. Maybe she’s still hoping I’m the key to Jaxon’s help.

“If you’re still holding out hope that Jaxon will come through for Dalton, he won’t. You saw the way he ran after Cassandra last night. She and Liam are his only concerns.” I meet her eyes steadily. “I’ll save Dalton. I promise I’ll find a way. Just not through Jaxon.”

She doesn’t look convinced. I can see the doubt written all over her face, the calculation as she tries to figure out if I’m telling the truth or just trying to placate her.

“How?” she asks finally.

“I have my ways.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only answer I can give you right now.” I move toward the door. “You should go back to your pack. I’ll contact you when I have news.”

“Skye-”

“Please.” I soften my voice slightly. “Trust me. I know what I’m doing.”

She studies me for a long moment. Then, slowly, she nods.

“Fine. I’ll leave. I’ll let you handle this however you think is best.” She picks up her bag, already packed from last night. “But Skye? If you’re serious about this divorce… you’re going to need your father’s support. Mine too. It won’t be easy.”

“I know.”

“I’m not sure you do.” She pauses at the door. “But when you’re ready to talk about it-really talk about it-you know where to find me.”

She leaves without another word.

I watch from the window as her car pulls away from the Alpha house, disappearing down the long driveway. Part of me is relieved. Another part knows I haven’t heard the last of this-Diana won’t give up easily, especially with Dalton’s freedom hanging in the balance.

But convincing Diana and my father to support a divorce is a problem for another day.

Right now, I have a more immediate concern.

I turn from the window and make my way back through the house. It’s quiet-too quiet. The kind of quiet that feels intentional, like the calm before a storm.

As I round the corner into the main hallway, I see them.

All of them.

Jaxon stands near the fireplace, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Cassandra sits on the sofa with Liam beside her, the boy playing with a toy car while she watches me with those calculating eyes. And Grandma Rose occupies the armchair, her face grave.

They’re waiting for me.

The realization hits like a physical blow. This isn’t a coincidence. They’ve gathered here deliberately, positioned themselves like pieces on a chessboard.

Jaxon’s eyes meet mine across the room, and something in his gaze makes my stomach drop.

“Skye,” he says. “We need to talk.”

I take a slow breath, my hand instinctively moving to my stomach before I force it back down.

I feel like I’m walking into the mouth of a monster. One that’s been waiting patiently to swallow me whole.

And Jaxon doesn’t waste time proving me right.

“Last night was unacceptable,” he begins, his tone clipped. “Your aunt had no right to speak to Cassandra that way. To speak to me that way, in my own home.”

I stand in the doorway, not moving closer. Grandma Rose gives me an encouraging nod, gesturing to the empty chair beside her. I shake my head slightly. I’d rather stand.

“Diana was out of line,” Jaxon continues. “Making accusations, causing a scene at a formal dinner. I understand she’s upset about her son’s situation, but that doesn’t give her the right to attack Cassandra for simply existing in this house.”
