Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 257
Ch. 28
Noah
Managing Cassandra’s presence is a discipline. I treat it like one-daily, deliberately, making sure I know exactly where she is at all times and ensuring there is no possibility I’ll run into her.
I keep telling myself this is working. And it must be, to some extent, because my symptoms have all but dissipated. The bond doesn’t like my refusal to interact, like a constant tug in her direction. But the bond can fuck right off!
This morning is another matter altogether. I’m not even that far away, still within pack territory/But my headache flares just the slightest as I drive the short distance to Dr. Lukas’s office for my weekly check-in.
She’s already laid out the panels side by side when I arrive, the current markers against the previous three weeks. I can read them myself now so I know before she says a word what the results mean.
“The progression has slowed.” She says this with equal parts relief and confusion, staring at the paperwork like it will start to make sense if she looks at it long enough.
“I see that.” I try and fail to hide my grin, the relief palpable.
“The headache frequency is down significantly. The temperature dysregulation is less severe.” She taps the comparison. “The markers that were advancing are not retreating. But they’re not advancing either.” She pauses for effect. “For the first time.”
“I know,” I say, still grinning at the prospect of the life this gives me.
Who knew Cassandra Winters could ever do anything to benefit someone besides herself. Even unwittingly.
Dr. Lukas is quiet for a moment.
“The proximity is working,” she observes, “This is significant, Noah.”
“I know that too.” I sigh. Because what we’re not saying is the part I don’t want to discuss but I know we’re going
to anyway.
“Help me understand, Noah.” She presses like I knew she would. “She’s not just some stranger who wandered into Ironwood territory needing help. You knew who she was all along. But you chose almost certain death over her. If she hadn’t shown up here, you’d still be suffering. Why?”
“Leave it alone Sera.” I growl but she doesn’t back off.
“I can’t leave it alone, Alpha.” She spits the title at me. “I’m a doctor. It’s my job to save people, not watch them die unnecessarily.”
I scrub my hand down my face, wanting this conversation to be over but knowing it won’t be until she’s said her piece. She closes the folder, her glare burning into me until I give in and meet her eyes.
“What’s your plan here, Noah? Only a bite fixes this permanently. Anything less than that is temporary.” She crosses her arms and stares me down, waiting for a response.
“I don’t know, okay. I’m still figuring that part out.”
“Well, figure it out soon!” She gathers her files and all but stomps out of the room, leaving me to consider all the things she didn’t say.
She didn’t say: this has consequences for what comes next.
