Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 299
Ch. 69
Cassandra
“What happened?” Jack asks when he reappears like clockwork for his afternoon visit.
The part of me still ruled by my mate bond with Noah recoils from the idea of another male knowing me so well but the rest of me kinda loves that he does this-shows up at the office, invites himself in like he belongs there, and immediately reads my face.
Normally, I’d delve right into whatever occupied my thoughts at the time, knowing he’s genuinely interested, which makes me feel special in ways I haven’t earned. But somehow, I don’t think my feelings about Noah’s inherent dismissal of anything and everything attached to me is something Jack should be subjected to.
“Nothing,” I deflect.
He looks at me for a moment. “Okay,” he draws out the word in that tone that means he doesn’t believe me but has decided not to push.
He pulls the chair around to my side of the desk, as close as he can get, like being in my orbit is all he needs in life. He sits, takes out his phone and just stays.
I try to shove all thoughts of Noah from my mind but after a while, the irritation just spills over. I don’t plan to say it, but the words tumble out anyway, “No matter how hard I work or how much it benefits him, he’ll never acknowledge me for it. Cole has to tell him he did it or he won’t even look at it. I get it, I fucked up. But does that mean nothing I do for the rest of my life has value?”
He looks at me, taken aback. “By him, I assume you mean Noah?” he says thoughtfully, no hint of jealousy or disapproval.
“By anyone,” I clarify. “But yes.”
He doesn’t offer sympathy or analysis or pretend to understand. But he does offer what he has to give. “I see you, sweetheart. He may not, but I do.”
“I know. And that means a lot to me. Thank you.” I reach over and pat his thigh where it presses against mine.
Heat swarms his gaze as it tracks the movement and a little growl rumbles in his chest. My cheeks heat, because we haven’t gone there yet and I know he wants to. I’m not sure what’s holding me back but he doesn’t push.
He clears his throat to cover the growl. Then he changes the subject. “Thursday’s still dinner. I made a reservation.
“I’m looking forward to it.” The smile I shoot him is genuine.
Because I am excited to spend more time with him. His simple acceptance settles something in me. And I wonder, not for the first time, why the thought of taking Jack to my bed sends little waves of terror crashing through my
veins.
It’s certainly not fear of Noah’s reaction. I’m all but certain he’s sleeping with Piper. I don’t owe him my loyalty, not in that way at least.
Maybe it’s the fear of disappointing him. I’m more than a little rusty in the sex department. In fact, it’s been so long, I’m not entirely sure my vagina hasn’t put up a “permanently closed due to prolonged vacancy” sign.
I know at one point Skye thought Jaxon and I were sleeping together, I’d meant for her to and I played my part well. But the truth is, Jaxon never cheated on her. In fact, in all honesty, I haven’t been with anyone since Jarrett

when Liam was conceived. Goddess knows, I’m more than a little over due.
so consumed by thoughts of my poor neglected pussy and the possibility of breaking my prolonged dry spell with Jack, my surroundings fade into the background as I’m leaving the office at the end of the day. Which is why I don’t see him coming down the corridor from the opposite direction.
That is, I don’t see him until I slam face first into the hard wall of his chest, his arms coming around me automatically to steady before I can bounce off in the opposite direction. He goes very still but doesn’t release me.
I freeze with my nose buried in his pec, the intoxicating scent of him enveloping me. I don’t dare look up, afraid he’ll read on my face every embarrassing thought that caused our collision.
“Cassandra,” my name is a deep rumble in his chest. I feel the vibrations of it against my overheated cheek.
He takes a deep breath and that’s when my scent reaches my own nose. Oh no! No, no, no! If I can smell my arousal, he definitely can too. Goddess, can this get any worse?
I don’t move, waiting to see what he’ll do. He’s deciding something. I can feel it in the way his hands clench around my arms and loosen repeatedly. He probably doesn’t even realize he’s doing it.
Finally, he takes a step back but doesn’t let go, the heat of his hands like a brand on my arms. He holds my gaze for a moment-long enough that the electricity from his touch leaves my knees weak. Then, before my brain can catch up, he’s gone.
And I’m left standing there with slick running down my thighs, breathing in a thick cloud of my own desire. I just broadcast to him and anyone within a fifty foot radius how needy I am. I might die of embarrassment, or maybe I just really need to get laid.
