Chapter 37

Nicolai

The text comes through while I’m in a meeting with the eastern territory representatives.

I ignore it at first-checking my phone during negotiations would shatter my stone cold façade, an illusion a man in my position cannot afford to break. But something makes me glance down when the representative is reviewing documents. The message preview shows just enough to make my chest tighten.

I can’t meet. Too many eyes on me.

I conclude the meeting fifteen minutes later with terms favorable enough that the representatives leave satisfied. They damn well better be considering the whole meeting was a ruse only meant to lend credibility to my reason for being here. They have nothing I need and yet I gave them what they asked for. They’re lucky Skye is more important to me than the crumbs I’m throwing them.

The moment the door closes behind them, I’m reading the full message.

I can’t meet. Too many eyes on me. But I need your help-my stepbrother Dalton is being held in the capital without charges. Can you help him? I’ll explain everything when I can get away. Please be careful.

Then: I’m sorry I can’t see you yet. Thank you for coming.

So she knows I’m close. I’m not surprised. A man of my reputation arriving in town is bound to set

tongues wagging.

What did she mean by “too many eyes on me” though? A respected Luna shouldn’t have to worry about something like that. Her Alpha should make sure of it.

Is someone watching her closely enough that she can’t move freely? Monitoring her movements, her interactions, her ability to leave the Alpha house without being tracked? That doesn’t make any sense.

My wolf surges forward with a snarl of protective rage.

“Dimitri,” I call through the door.

My Beta appears within seconds, reading my expression with the ease of fifteen years of partnership. ”

Problem?”

“I need everything you can find on Dalton Winters. Specifically why he’s being held in the capital detention facility.” I forward him Skye’s text. “And I need it within the hour.”

Dimitri scans the message, his own expression hardening. “This is from her?”

“Yes.”

He doesn’t ask why Skye is reaching out to me instead of her own mate. Doesn’t question why I’m dropping everything to help. He just nods and disappears.

I pace my office, re-reading her text compulsively.

Too many eyes on me.

Is Vale controlling her? Monitoring her? The thought makes me want to drive south immediately, storm into his territory, and remove her from whatever situation she’s trapped in.

But I can’t. Not without making things worse for her. Not without her permission.

That doesn’t mean it won’t be the first thing I do if she asks me to.

He’s right. I can’t just appear at the Vale pack demanding to see Skye. That would put a target on her back, make Vale suspicious, potentially trap her further.

I need a legitimate reason to be there.

Good thing no one says no to me. Ever.
