Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 50
Chapter 50
Jaxon
“Where were you?” I ask Skye, not wanting our conversation to end. “These past three days?”
“I told you. Visiting my father and Diana.”
“And?”
“And nothing.” She sets her book aside with deliberate care. “I checked on Dalton. I spent time with my
father and Diana. Now I’m back.”
“That’s it? That’s all that happened?”
“What else would have happened?”
I want to shake her. Want to demand she tell me what she was really doing, what she was planning with Diana. Want to see some kind of emotion-anger, hurt, anything but this polite indifference.
And to think, not so long ago, I would have found a conversation like this tedious. Now, I’m almost desperate for it.
“You didn’t call,” I say instead.
“You didn’t ask me to.”
“I’m your mate-”
“Yes, you’ve mentioned that.” Skye stands, moving toward the bed. “Is there something specific you need, Jaxon? It’s late and I’m tired.”
Watching her dismiss me so easily, I’m hit with a sudden, terrible certainty.
Skye isn’t coming back to me.
She’s already gone-emotionally, mentally, in every way that matters. She might be physically present in the house, sharing this room, sleeping in that bed. But the woman who used to look at me with longing and hope is gone.
Replaced by this stranger who treats me with polite indifference.
And I did this.
I pushed her away so effectively that she left without ever moving.
The realization should devastate me. Instead, it ignites something I haven’t felt in years.
Determination.
“I told Cassandra she’s moving out of the Alpha house,” I say abruptly.

Skye pauses in the act of pulling back the covers. “What?”

“Not leaving the pack. But moving to the guest house. She and Liam.” I run a hand through my hair. “I can’t send them away-Liam is my son, and he still needs medical care. But I can’t keep them living here, under the same roof as you. It’s not right.”
Skye is quiet for a long moment, studying me with an expression I can’t read.
“I see,” she says finally.
“You were right. About all of it. This situation has been unfair to you. It’s been destroying our marriage.”
“Our marriage was already destroyed, Jaxon. Cassandra just made it more obvious.”
The casual way she says it-like our marriage is a foregone conclusion, already over-makes my wolf snarl with rejection.
“It doesn’t have to be,” I say, moving closer. “I know I’ve made mistakes. I know I haven’t been the mate you deserved. But I want to fix this. I want to fight for us.” 2
Skye looks at me for a long moment, and I can’t read her expression.
“Why now?” she finally asks. “Why, after three years, do you suddenly want to fight?”
Because I’m losing you. Because another Alpha looks at you with warmth I should have shown you. Because I can’t stand the thought of you belonging to anyone else.

Skye shifts in her sleep, turning onto her side facing away from me. The moonlight through the window catches on her profile, and I notice things I haven’t been paying attention to before.
The slight fullness to her face. The way her nightgown seems tighter across her chest than it used to be.
The way she unconsciously curves her hand over her stomach, even in sleep.
My wolf goes absolutely still.
The scent changes. The exhaustion Noah mentioned. The way she’s been avoiding Dr. Lukas. The nausea I’ve caught her hiding.
The pieces hover at the edge of my consciousness, trying to form a picture I’m not ready to see.
I turn onto my side, facing her back in the darkness, and for the first time in our marriage, I wish I’d been paying attention all along.
Because I have the terrible feeling I’ve been missing something crucial.
And by the time I figure out what it is, it might already be too late.
