Chapter 62

Jaxon

When I left Skye the note saying I was leaving on pack business, it was a lie.

I drove to my family’s cabin in the mountains instead-a place I haven’t been since before I took over for my father as Alpha. It’s the only place far enough from the pack that I could think without the weight of responsibility, of expectations, of Skye’s hurt eyes following me through every room of the Alpha house.

I spent two days there. Two days forcing myself to confront truths I’d been avoiding for three years.

The cabin was cold when I arrived, dust covering every surface. But I didn’t care. I built a fire, sat on the porch, and let Noah’s words circle through my mind on an endless loop.

You’re still treating this like a problem to solve rather than a relationship to fix.

He was right.

Everything I’d been doing-monitoring Skye, threatening her, trying to control the situation-it was exactly what drove her away in the first place.

And I’d been too blind to see it.

I thought about the mate bond. About that night at Skye’s Shifting Party three years ago when everything

changed.

I remember the moment it snapped into place. The overwhelming pull. The loss of control as my wolf surged forward, claiming her before my conscious mind could process what was happening.

One moment I was watching from across the room-admiring her beauty, sure, but not planning anything. The next, we were alone and my wolf had taken over completely.

When I came back to myself, she was beneath me, our bond sealed, her scent in my lungs and her mark.

on my skin.

And I felt trapped.

Manipulated.

Like someone-like she-had drugged me to force this. To take away my choice, my control, and bind me to her permanently.

I’d accused her of it in those first terrible weeks. Demanded to know what she’d given me, how she’d done it. She’d denied it through tears, insisting it was just the pull of the bond that we both succumbed

But I didn’t believe her.

Couldn’t believe her.

Because it didn’t make sense. I knew a fated mate bond was strong, I’d seen it before. But I always thought if it happened to me, I’d be stronger. I’d use my head, make sure fate had chosen wisely for me before giving in. Believing her would mean accepting that I’d lost control on my own. That my wolf had chosen without my permission. And I couldn’t live with that.

So I punished her instead.

For three years.

Sitting on that porch watching the sun set over the mountains, I had an epiphany.

What if I was wrong?

What if I’d spent three years destroying my mate over something she never did? 1

The thought was devastating.

But it also would also explain everything. Her hurt. Her confusion at my coldness. The way she tried so hard in the beginning-cooking my favorite meals, asking about my day, touching me with such tentative hope-and I shut her down. Every. Single. Time.

Maybe I’ve been fighting the wrong battle.

Maybe the enemy was never Skye.

Maybe it was me all along. 1

I made a decision sitting there as the last light faded from the sky.

I was going to go back. I was going to tell Skye everything-my fears, my accusations, my three years of misplaced blame. Give her a chance to respond without me dismissing her immediately.

And then, regardless of what she said, I was going to beg her for time.

Time to prove I could change. Time to actually try to make this marriage work.

Not for control. Not for the pack. Not even for the baby. 1

For her.

I drove back through the night, arriving at the Alpha house just after dawn.

She just stared at me, her expression carefully neutral. “About?”

“About us. About everything.” I stepped inside, closing the door. “Can we go somewhere private?”

“This is private.”

“I mean our bedroom. Please.”

Something in my tone must have convinced her, because she stood and followed me upstairs without

argument.

A small victory. But at this point, I’d taken anything I could get.
