Chapter 70

Silvercrest Estate is exactly as I remember it-imposing stone architecture, sprawling grounds, and enough political tension to choke on.
Perfect for the Woolf family’s purposes.
I arrive with Dimitri and a small security detail, our convoy of black SUVS drawing attention as we pull up to the main house. Other Alphas are already here, their territorial markers obvious in the way they’ve positioned themselves throughout the estate.
“Alpha Castellano is in the east wing,” Dimitri murmurs as we enter. “Alpha Choi has the west. The northern delegations took the guest cottages.”
I nod, cataloging the information. Politics and geography-always intertwined at these gatherings.
But I’m not here for the official summit business.
I’m here for Skye.
And for the opportunities that always present themselves when powerful wolves gather under one roof. These are the types of venues where our family business thrives.
Dimitri and I go straight to our suite to change. The first formal event of the summit is being held in the estate’s grand ballroom this evening and I can’t afford to be late.
Once I’m dressed in my most expensive bespoke suit, the kind that makes a statement, we make our way to the ballroom. I position myself near the bar, nursing a drink I have no intention of finishing, and
observe.
Alpha politics is a game of dominance and deference, of knowing when to push and when to yield. I’ve been playing it since I was eighteen, when my father died and I inherited the Woolf family’s empire.
Legal and otherwise.
“Alpha Woolf.” A voice interrupts my observations. “I was hoping to speak with you.”
I turn to find Alpha Marino from the western territories. Mid-forties, ambitious, and clearly overestimating his position.
“Alpha Marino.” I incline my head politely. “What can I do for you?”
“I’ve been reviewing shipping routes through the northern passage,” he says, getting straight to business. “The Woolf family controls most of the commercial traffic. I believe there’s room for… diversification.”
Ah So he wants to muscle in on our territory.
“Diversification,” I repeat, my voice pleasant. “Interesting choice of words.”

“The routes are underutilized. My pack could-”
“Could what?” I interrupt gently. “Improve on three generations of Woolf family management? Take over routes that have been our holdings since before you were born?”
Marino’s jaw tightens. “I’m simply suggesting a partnership-”
“I appreciate your ambition, Alpha Marino.” I set down my glass with deliberate care. “But like I said, these routes have been Woolf family holdings for three generations. They’re not open for partnership. Or negotiation. Or discussion.”
I lean in slightly, lowering my voice so only he can hear.
“I’d hate for an unfortunate accident to befall your pack’s primary export facility. Supply chain disruptions can be so… costly. Especially when they happen during peak season.”
The threat is delivered with a smile. Polite. Measured. Absolutely chilling.
Marino goes pale. “I… I understand.”
“Excellent.” I straighten, my pleasant expression never wavering. “Enjoy the summit, Alpha Marino.”
He retreats quickly, and I catch Dimitri’s approving look from across the room.
She’s breathtaking.
A deep green gown that flows around her like water, hiding the pregnancy I know is there. Her dark hair is swept up, exposing the graceful line of her neck. She moves with the practiced elegance of someone who’s spent years playing a role.
She’s fucking gorgeous and I want to loose a possessive growl at the way these lesser Alphas are blatantly ogling her. But that would be overplaying my hand so I swallow it back.
Still, despite her obvious beauty, I can see what others miss.
The strain around her eyes that makeup doesn’t quite conceal. The careful way she moves, playing a role she was born for but loathes all the same. The distance she maintains even while standing next to her
mate.
Our eyes meet across the room for the briefest moment and she gives me the slightest nod.
I’m okay. It says, acknowledging the concern in my eyes.
I return it. I’m here for you.
Then she turns away, and I watch Jaxon’s hand settle possessively on her lower back as he guides her
to their table.
My wolf snarls with jealous fury.
And this time it takes everything I have to hold him back!
