On Monday morning, Simon brought two gardeners to start clearing the plot in the backyard for Victoria’s herb garden. They started at eight, but after just over an hour of digging, Simon was already aching all over and drenched in sweat.

Since he was still dragging around a leg that had only just healed from a break, his balance was all over the place.

‘So this is what Victoria had to go through all the time back in the village?‘ Simon thought.

“Did you really do all this farm work by yourself back in the village?” Simon paused, leaning on his hoe, glancing at Victoria, who was kicked back in a lounge chair, flipping through a medical book like she was on vacation.

Victoria snapped, “Good, as long as you know. If you’ve got any shame left, just keep your mouth shut. You nearly left a scar on my face, and you call that just ‘making trouble? If it had been some ordinary girl who couldn’t fight back, you would’ve destroyed her whole life?

Then she turned her attention back to her medical book, clearly not interested in hearing any more

Simon pressed on, “Maybe if you’d said that before, I would’ve thought you were just overestimating yourself. But now, I have to admit you’re actually capable. That’s exactly why I hate to see you get trapped in resentment and revenge.”

Victoria snapped her inedical book shut, her cold smile exposing Simon’s so–called good intentions for what they really were,

Victoria said, “Simon, you’re just as arrogant as ever, just like when we first met. If your plans had worked and I hadn’t fought back, would you have ever reflected on your actions? You’re not saying this because you feel guilty or think you owe me anything.

“You’re only scared now because you finally lost, and you realized the person you thought you. could control might be the one to bring you down and leave you with nothing.”

Simon was left speechless by her words.

Julia hurried to reassure her, “Angelica, you’re right. We really did overlook your feelings when we tried to acknowledge Victoria as part of the family again. But you have to believe, in our hearts. you’re our true daughter. No doubt about it.

“The only reason your dad and I wanted to bring Victoria back wasn’t out of genuine affection. It was just so your uncle’s family wouldn’t take advantage.”
