**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 148**
**Chapter 148**
**Imben’s POV**
“What the hell are you doing here?” Jake’s voice cut through the air like a knife, sharp and accusatory. He rose from his position near one of the grates, muscles taut and ready, every inch of him radiating hostility. I could see the tension in his stance, as if he were preparing for a confrontation. I mirrored his posture, my own muscles coiling with a mix of anger and anticipation, ready to engage if it came to that.
But deep down, my mind was elsewhere, consumed with worry for Amelia and the unborn child we had yet to meet.
“Same thing you are,” I shot back, my tone icy and unyielding. “Like hell I am going to leave my wife and unborn child down there in some dank pit.” The thought of Amelia in danger ignited a fire within me, one that demanded action.
Jake’s eyes narrowed, and he spat out his next words with venom. “Emmy that you should care about them now. Didn’t think about her at all, did you, when you were sleeping with someone else?” His accusation hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.
“I wasn’t sleeping with anyone else!” I growled, my voice low and fierce. “I may not be perfect, but I would never betray my mate.” The truth of my words felt like a shield against his onslaught, even as doubt crept in.
“Then why is she feeling the pain through the mating bond?” Jake challenged, his gaze piercing through me.
“I don’t know!” I exclaimed, frustration boiling over. “If I had the answers, I would fix it. I’ve even got Dr. Wyatt looking into it. None of this makes sense!” My heart raced, not just from anger but from the weight of helplessness.
Jake studied me intently, his glare unwavering, but for a moment, the tension shifted. It was as if he was weighing my words, searching for something deeper beneath the surface. I squared my shoulders, meeting his gaze head-on, determined to stand my ground.
“Listen,” I said, my voice dropping to a serious tone, “whatever you think of me, save it for tomorrow. Right now, we have a common goal. I won’t waste another second while Amelia needs me.” My anger toward Jake was palpable, and the desire to unleash my fists upon him was strong, but my priority was clear: protect Amelia at all costs.
Jake growled, frustration evident in his posture, but his eyes flicked back toward the grate, a hint of urgency creeping into his demeanor.
“Shit,” he muttered, realization dawning. “We can’t waste time.”
“Exactly,” I replied, my impatience bubbling over.
