Amelia’s POV

“Damien!” I shouted as I woke up, sitting abruptly upright in bed.

Wait… Bed?

Looking around, I was surprised to find myself in a small patient room of what seemed like a medical clinic. My heart was connected to the heart monitor, which currently beeped rather wildly. There was an IV dripping nutrients into my arm.

“It’s okay, Amelia,” Jake said, standing beside my bed. “Relax. You are safe now.”

That seemed to be true, and I trusted Jake so I did start to calm down. But many questions ran through my head at this time.

Chief among them was, was Damien?

Yet before I could utter one word, let alone an entire question, Jake placed his hands on my shoulders and eased me back down to the bed. “Just play along, okay?” he said.

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

At the same time, the door to the room opened and a nurse entered. She was carrying a file folder and seemed surprised that I was awake. “Ah! Miss Jean. You’ve finally decided to stop taking a nap, did you?”

Miss… Jean?

“My sister, Jean,” Jake said, looking at me pointedly, before returning his attention to the nurse. “She woke up just a minute ago. She seems a little disoriented but otherwise well. I don’t think we will need to stay much longer.”

“Well, that’s up to the doctor to decide,” the nurse said. “He should check her out anyway, especially if she’s confused. He’ll need to decide if she has any brain injury. If you will excuse me.” The nurse turned then and left

the room.

As soon as the door was closed behind her, Jake turned to me. “We’re on the run,” he said.

Slowly, I remembered more about what had happened, about the Alphia King accusing me of being a witch and sending me down into the dungeon, about how I was threatened by the other prisoners and then attacked, saved at the last minute by Damien.

“Where is Damien?” I asked.

Jake seemed uncomfortable then, his eyes darting away. “Does that matter?”

“He saved me,” I said. Plus, though I didn’t want to admit any feelings, given the strain on our relationship, I was just worried about him. I hated that I still cared for him, even after everything he’d done, but my feelings weren’t something I could just turn on and off like a light switch.

Damien was still tangled up in my heart, and I needed to be certain that he was okay.

Jake still wouldn’t meet my gaze. “Damien rescued you, he brought you out to me and told me to get you away. Then, he stayed behind to give us the time and distraction we would need to make our escape.”

“He stayed… behind…?” My worry compounded into outright panic, that was reflected on the rapid beeping of the

heart monitor.
