Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 189

Chapter 189

Damien’s POV

The pain was so severe that I couldn’t follow it. I felt like I was standing in a buzzing room surrounded by spikes. Everything was echoing, amplifying, confusing me. I struggled to hold onto my mind as I searched out the only person I thought might have some idea where Amelia was.

Jake.

One of my arms I wrapped around myself, holding myself back, trying to physically hold myself from shifting. The other hand I cupped my head, my headache returning full force now as I was trying to grasp that my mate might be dead.

Inside of me, my wolf was raging and howling so loudly that I could barely hear my own thoughts. So easily, I could fall into alignment with him, shift, and rage again.

Remembering Victoria’s terrified face helped me hold on. My sister and I didn’t have the best relationship but the last thing I wanted to do was frighten her like I had, ever again.

I had no real sense of what time it was, but I imagined it was morning? Late morning perhaps, or early afternoon. I remembered from the itinerary of the event that a brunch was taking place in the hotel lobby for guests of the Alpha Ball.

With effort, I made my way there. I tried to act normal as I entered the room filled with other Alphas and their guests, but they all must have been able to immediately perceive what was wrong with me, because the entire room seemed to quiet as everyone looked at me.

I guessed that made things easier, really. I didn’t have to pretend and make small talk to get what I wanted.

“Where’s Jake?” I asked.

“No one’s seen him since last night,” said a nearby Alpha, as he stepped solidly and protectively in front of his family.

That wasn’t a great answer. It told me nothing. “Where are his parents?” I asked. They might have some idea

about Amelia.

“They disappeared this morning,” said another Alpha, on the other side of the room.

“Sienna?” I asked, pulling at straws now. Sienna and Amelia did not get along, but as Sienna was part of Jake’s family, I thought she might know. The final option.

My own sister Victoria stepped forward from the crowd then, walking right up to me. “Sienna’s out shopping. Damien, you look terrible.”

She wasn’t looking too great herself, with the way those heavy bags hung under her eyes. Seeing her made the weight of guilt even heavier down onto me.

“I need Amelia,” I said, keeping my voice as low as I could. I just wanted to speak to my sister now, though I knew the other werewolves in the room would still be able to hear with their heightened senses. “I need to see her and know she’s alright.”

Victoria frowned deeply as a sort of pain crossed her face.

“Do you know something?” I asked, because I didn’t know what else could cause a look like that to cross her face.

“I don’t, but…” She weaved her fingers together in front of her. “Damien, maybe you should check the hospitals. If you are feeling this badly, and if something happened…”

“Hospitals,” I said, with a pit in my stomach. She was right though. If something did happen to Amelia, that would be where I would find her.

There or the morgue.

I didn’t want to think about that yet.

Hospitals first.

Hospitals only.

Jake’s POV

After delivering Amelia to the hospital, I couldn’t sit still, pacing back and forth in the waiting room. I kept thinking about what must have happened in that forest. How frightened Amelia must have been!

As I’d carried her, I’d spotted barely healed bullet wounds on her back. Was that what finally triggered her wolf? The imminent threat of death? The deeply rooted desire to protect her baby?

I spent most of the night pacing, until I finally realized that I should call my parents. I hoped they would have answers, and more than that, they should be here for their daughter.

All parents had secrets, but I didn’t think my parents were the type who would have knowingly given up their daughter. There had to be more to this than that, which meant they were victims here too. And if they were, they were entitled to know about Amelia and her condition.

And the condition of their grandchild.

I didn’t trust my voice on the phone, so I texted them instead, telling them where I was and to hurry.

They came at dawn, likely when they woke and saw the message.

When they came through the door, Mom worried her hands together. Dad’s hands were fists.

“We’ve been restless all night,” Mom said as they approached me. “I swear I could sense something was wrong, I just didn’t know what.”

“Me, too,” Dad said. “But we didn’t know what could be the cause. Not until we got your message.” He paused a moment before asking, “Amelia?”

“She was in a horrible attack,” I told them. “But she saved herself because her wolf manifested.”

“Her… wolf…?” Mom asked, her eyes going wide. She looked at the door to the emergency room. Back there, somewhere, was Amelia.

I swallowed hard, knowing what I had to ask. It was past time for the full truth to come out, but that didn’t make this conversation any easier to have.

“Mom. Dad,” I said, claiming both of their attentions back onto me. “Did you know that Amelia is your daughter?”

“What?” Dad said sharply, surprise all over his face. Mom’s reaction was more intense; she passed out.

Later, after Mom woke up, and I explained everything, we sat together in the waiting room. They were stunned but not argumentative. They must have felt the same familial pull as me, but they must have dismissed it same as I had, believing Amelia was a human.

When I finished talking, we sat in silence for a long time. Mom was crying into her handkerchief. Dad was frowning, his anger clear.

“We never had a third child,” Mom said.

Dad looked at her. “I’m sorry to say this, to even suggest it, but… perhaps this why we never felt such a strong bond with Sienna.”

“She is our daughter,” Mom said stubbornly.

“Yes, and she always will be,” Dad said. “But… what if she really… isn’t?”

“What are you saying, Martin? That someone switched my daughter at birth? Who would have done such a thing?”
