“It’s not on you at all,” I said. “If anyone will take the blame it’s me, and I’m more than capable to carry it.”

“Jake…” Mom started, but she was cut off by the ringing of the telephone.

I was going to ignore it, thinking it might be Damien again, but then I saw the hospital’s number on the caller ID.

“I have to get this,” I said and answered. “Hello?”

“Alpha Jake. This is Healer Eve.”

“Healer Eve. Is this about Amelia?”

“Yes,” she said. “She’s woken up.”

Relief flooded through me so much, I didn’t immediately realize the stilted way Eve said the words.

“That’s great news,” I said.

“Yes… but there is a problem.”

In a flash, the good feeling vanished, replaced with fresh worry. “What is it?”

“You’d better come in and see for yourself.”

I couldn’t relax the whole way to the hospital. Mom called Dad and he met us there. Sienna was with him, though he took her home first. She wasn’t ready to face Amelia yet.

When we met at the hospital, we rushed to find Healer Eve. She was standing outside the door to Amelia’s room, blocking us from entering.

“What’s this about, Eve?” Dad asked.

Eve sighed. “You should know before you go in. Amelia is suffering from amnesia. There is a very likely chance that she won’t remember you. She doesn’t even seem to remember herself. I’m hoping seeing you will trigger something, but I need you to be prepared that it might not.”

My heart sunk all the way down into my stomach. If she didn’t remember us, did that mean she didn’t remember Amy either?

My parents and I looked at each other, then nodded. Eve let us into the room.

Amelia looked small in her hospital bed, though it was a relief to see her awake. She seemed healthier too, with some color back in her cheeks. Yet, when she looked at us like strangers, I only felt pain and regret.

I tried to push those feelings down, wanting to be happy that she was healthy and awake.

Quickly, I tried to decide how much to tell her, or if I should tell her anything at all. She’d experienced so much trauma lately, perhaps it would be better if she could start over again.

My parents and I came closer to the bed. She looked at us curiously, but not with alarm.

“You feel familiar,” she said. “Do I know you?”

Mom and Dad glanced at each other. “We are your parents,” Mom said.

That made Amelia brighten, and she sat a little taller in the bed. “Oh! So you can tell me who I am?”

The hope in her voice made my heart crack.

“Yes, um…” They looked back at me.

I knew what that look meant. They were deferring to me on what to do here, how to treat this scenario. We would tell her as much or as little as I decided. Maybe they gave me this right as Alpha, or perhaps they were just at a loss and needed help.

“I’m Jake, your brother,” I said.

“I have a brother?” she asked.
