Chapter 202
“She can’t stay here,” Mom said. Lifting her hand, she lightly tucked Amy’s blankets more solidly around her. Amy cooed in response, reaching out her small hands.
I hadn’t held her yet. Though I checked on her, I was afraid to get too close, to make a connection that would turn my decision upside down. I had to stick to my guns on this and do what was best for Amelia.
“I’m asking you to help find a foster family for her,” Mom said. “Or I can do it. If she cannot stay here, but cannot come with us, we need to do what’s right for her and allow another loving family to raise her.”
I knew she was right but I still hesitated. She was still our family. Who could we trust her with? To love her as much as we did?
“Maybe,” I said, still not ready to commit either way.
Mom shook her head. “Son, you know how quickly time moves. It will not wait for you. This baby will age while you are trapped in your indecision.”
I knew she was right, but I still wasn’t ready to give Amy up. For another night, at least, Amy could stay here.
“Soon,” I promised, which seemed to placate my mom for now.
I only hoped that I meant it.
Amelia’s POV
I must have dozed again while waiting for Jake to return from his errand, but when I came back to the land of the living, Eve was typing away at the computer in the room.
Looking around, I said, “Where’s my baby?”
Eve froze.
I did too.
What had I just said?
*
“What did you just say?” Eve asked me, mirroring my own thoughts.
She seemed alarmed.
“I don’t know why I said that,” I told her.
“Am… Annette,” Eve said. She moved away from the computer then, coming closer to me. “You are crying.”
Reaching up, I touched my cheeks and found they were wet. Yes, now that I realized it, I could tell I was sobbing lightly. My nose was stuffy and my shoulders weren’t as steady as they had been earlier.
