Chapter 204
Jake’s POV
My parents and I had been taking turns going out with Amelia while the others stayed at home to secretly plan the funeral. None of us liked keeping secrets from Amelia, but we were in too deep to turn back now.
I kept reminding myself, this was all for her own sake. If Damien wasn’t responsible for Amelia’s attack, then he would find out who was. Then he could come to the funeral, say his goodbyes, and get out of our lives forever.
With Amelia free of him at last, she could finally start over. She deserved a fresh start, a new life without Damien hold her down.
Amy was another issue, but for now, she was still at the hospital. The longer I put off finding a home for her though, the more my mother disapproved.
She wasn’t too fond of the funeral either. Dad understood, but Mom was the harder sell.
Not only did she not like lying to Amelia, she thought she should be allowed to make her own choices regarding Damien. But, as I consistently reminded her, with Amelia in such a delicate state, Damien would be able to manipulate her in new ways. He probably try to tell her that their past wasn’t as bad as it was, and she would probably believe him.
Mom gave me a flat look, “Like you are doing.”
“It’s different,” I said. “I’m family.”
Mom still seemed troubled.
Today, Dad had taken Amelia out for a long drive to the country side of my pack, to look at the baby goats and horses. In the meantime, Mom and I were here, planning, though she wasn’t being particularly helpful.
“What kind of flowers should we order?” I asked her, thinking she might like some of the superficial choices, if she didn’t want to think about fake ashes and memorial portraits.
“Lilies,” Mom said.
“That’s a good choice,” I said, trying to encourage her participation. “Would you be comfortable calling the florist?”
She frowned a little. “You understand I’m not approving of this…”
“Your opinion is noted, Mom,” I said. “Honestly, I wish there was a different way. But this is the best option I can think of at the moment.”
Mom hung her head, but I could tell she was coming around. Maybe not all the way, she clearly didn’t want to partake in this, but she could at least agree enough to call the florist.
“I just hope she can forgive us if she gets her memories back,” Mom said. Then she reached for the phone to make
the call.
I spared a moment to hope for that too.
Damien’s POV
Now that I had names, I did even more digging. I went the phone company, providing names and numbers. I wanted a timeline, to know who called who and when, as well as any text messages they could provide.

There were some holes here and there, making clear there was yet another accomplice who still remained hidden, but the rest of the evidence was clear.
Claire, Ethan, and Victoria had all plotted in Amelia’s death.
Their text messages told a vicious story of betrayal and murder.
My stomach twisted, even as the rest of me grew cold. This chill eventually spread to all of me, removing all feeling, good or bad.
I felt nothing.
With printouts of all the messages in hand, copies stored in safe places in case something happened with the printouts I had, I traveled to Claire’s house. I had already contacted Victoria and Ethan to meet me there.
When I arrived, the three of them were in the living room. Clare was sitting down but the other two were standing. Victoria was already crying. Ethan stood nearby, arms crossed by face downcast.
Claire had already betrayed me, but these cuts from my sister and my trusted Beta were new. Fortunately I had already cut off my emotions. If I hadn’t, this probably would have stung so deeply, I might have been stricken
with it.
“You know why I’m here,” I said.
Victoria and Ethan couldn’t meet my gaze. Claire did, though, boldly.
“I assume it’s just a nice house call to check up on your child,” she said.
“It would be easier if you would admit what you’ve done,” I said. “You will be punished either way, but I might be more prone to leniency if I heard the truth from you.” I looked at Victoria and then at Ethan. “You have done much for this pack, Beta. I am grateful for that. But not grateful enough to overlook the planned murder of my wife.”
I threw the papers I’d been holding down onto the ground. They fluttered and spread, covering the floor with conversations between the three of them and the driver who had committed the act.
Their guilt was there, splattered all across the floor.
“Deny it,” I said threateningly, my teeth clenched. “Someone please deny it so I can tear your throats out.”
“It wasn’t my idea,” Claire said, her bottom lip wobbling. “Ethan made me do it!”
“You vile bitch!” Victoria snapped. “You are the one who manipulated him into doing this! And me too! I didn’t like Amelia, but I never wanted to murder her!”
“Victoria,” Ethan said sadly but firmly, as if trying to get her to stop. He knew me perhaps better than anyone else in this room. He knew this kind of talk was futile with me. In fact, it only made me angrier at the lot of them.
“I already know everything,” I growled. “It’s all there in your messages.”
“Alpha,
“Ethan said, then dropped to one knee. “I admit fault. I had allowed rumors and concerns of the good of the pack to impair my judgement. I should have protected our Luna, but instead I helped…” He paused a moment, then tried again, his voice cracking, “I helped murder her.”
“Ethan, until this, I’ve always known you to be an honorable man,” I said. “So I will ask you to please protect my sister on the hard road ahead of you.”
He glanced up, surprised. He probably thought I would have had him killed. Maybe I would have, if his manipulation had not been clear in the text messages. Victoria’s, too.
