Chapter 222
Embarrassed now, by what I had done and the tears on my face, I ran passed Jake and rushed up the stairs to my
room.
Fortunately, it didn’t seem like Cara followed me.
In my room, I closed the door, shutting out the rest of the world.
I wanted to be alone.
Jake’s POV
Amelia’s tears cut me deeply, but I knew I had made the right choice. For six years, I had fought to keep Amelia hidden from Damien. I wasn’t going to lose her now because of her curiosity, even if that meant I had to lie to her and keep her in the dark about her past, her ex, and her children.
Cara stayed behind, watching me as Amelia had stormed off. As someone who had been around Amelia in her darkest moments, Cara should have been my staunchest ally in this. She knew as I did that Damien was responsible for so much of her hurt.
Yet Cara’s look, though mostly restrained, still held some doubt.
She didn’t need to say the words for me to understand her meaning.
Are we doing the right thing?
The answer was simple.
Right or not, this was the only way now. We’d walked this path for too long to turn back now. If we were to reveal the truth to Amelia after all this time lying to her, she might hate us forever.
“We are protecting her,” I reminded Cara and myself.
Truly, I hated lying to her, but, as I had told myself time and again throughout these past six years, the lying was the only way to keep her free from Damien and therefore free of the pain of the past.
“I trust you,” Cara said, and it was nice to know at least someone did. “But you cannot change who she fundamentally is. She felt something, and that isn’t going to go away just because you want it to.”
Amelia, as I knew her, had been curious and forthright. I knew Cara was right. If left to her own devices, Amelia would not be able to let this go.
The only thing I could really do now, to try to stop her from driving herself mad with these thoughts was to give her a better alternative.
“Then we’ll find a way to distract her,” I told Cara. “Go back to your post. I have a call to make.”
Cara went one way and I went another, moving to my office.
Amelia’s date with Ian hadn’t gone particularly well, from what I’d heard, but that didn’t mean that a second time wouldn’t fare better.
So I picked up the phone and called Ian.
“Alpha Jake, it is a pleasure,” Ian said. “I trust Annette is well?”
“She is,” I lied. “In fact, she’s been talking about you, and how she feels so badly for how poorly things went on
1/2
your last date.”
“Oh,” Ian said, seemingly pleased. “Well, perhaps we could rectify that.”
