Amelia’s POV
I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I got turned around again, flustered with Ian’s curt directions. So as I accidentally came closer to Ian and Damien again, I heard Damien’s voice, clear as day, as he said, “I have no interest in romantically pursuing Annette.”
Those words, though they had no real reason to, sliced through my heart, cutting me down to the quick. My face burned with shame and I felt heavy all over.
Quickly, so as not to be noticed, I turned around, more accurately following Ian’s instruction this time, and finally came out of the hedge maze.
Outside the maze, I startled slightly as a man who was dressed so lavishly that he could only be the Alpha King approached. Mom and Dad were with him.
Alpha King Benedict walked right up to me, looked me over from head to toe, and then turned to my father.” Martin, I trust you have an explanation for this?”
“One I would be willing to give privately,” Dad said. “If you would gift me a minute of your time.”
The Alpha King frowned, and I immediately wrapped my arms around myself, wondering if I had displeased him. I hadn’t even met him before, that I could remember. Why would he be mad at me?
As Dad and the Alpha King walked off, Mom came over to me and gave me a small smile.
“None of this is your fault,” she told me. “It’s all going to be alright, I promise.”
I wanted to trust Mom, but it was growing more difficult with how much I had been lied to for the past six years. To tell her that would hurt her though, and that wasn’t something I was willing to do.
“I hope so,” I said, keeping my true feelings vague. She wrapped her around my shoulder, and I tried to accept the comfort she offered, even if I no longer trusted her honesty.
Martin’s POV
In private, I explained to my brother the Alpha King all about what we had done, disguising Amelia as Annette and keeping it secret even from her. The deeper I dove into the story, the more Benedict seemed to become annoyed
with me.
In a break in my tale, he asked, “And you didn’t think to include me in on this plan?”
“I’m sorry, brother,” I said. “You, I trust, which is why I am telling you now, in person. But I couldn’t trust any correspondence. All it would take is for one leak, and everything would come crashing down.”
“It could still crash, Martin,” Benedict said. “You are playing a dangerous game here, and there is no telling when Amelia’s memory will return.”
“We know that,” I said. “But we are hoping that by the time this occurs, she will be entrenched in her new life and in love with a new man.”
“So this is ultimately about Damien.”
“You must remember how much trouble he is,” I said. “How nuclear they were when they were together. They were bad for each other.”
Benedict frowned but to his credit, he did consider my words.

“I think this is a terrible, short-sighted plan. A true hole you and your family have dug for yourselves. But. I have fondness for my niece, and am relieved to hear she yet lives, even in this circumstance.”
He hummed, then nodded. “Yes, I remember the troublemaker Damien was, and all the problems he brought down on Amelia. You know her best, Martin. If you think this is good for her…”
“I’m sure of it,” I said, surprised my voice came out so confident when I was not nearly so inside.
