**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 282**
**Chapter 282**
**Amelia’s POV**
As I slowly blinked my eyes open, I found myself gazing up at the sterile ceiling of what seemed to be an examination room in a hospital. The bright overhead lights cast a harsh glow, illuminating the stark white walls and the clinical equipment scattered around. Sitting up in the narrow bed, I took a moment to survey my surroundings. Oddly enough, I didn’t feel like a patient. There were no IV tubes snaking into my arms, nor any wires tethering me to a heart monitor that would beep incessantly, reminding me of my vulnerability.
Yet, a nagging question lingered in my mind: how on earth did I end up here?
The last thing I could clearly recall was Dr. Wyatt attending to Stacy, her brow furrowed in concentration, and then they both had to leave the room. After that, I had been tidying up the space, organizing the clutter, and then… nothing. Just a blank void where my memories should have been.
I swung my legs over the edge of the examination bed, my feet touching the cool floor. A slight wobble in my knees reminded me that I hadn’t quite regained my full strength. Still, I felt surprisingly alright, considering the disorientation that clouded my thoughts.
What a peculiar situation! Had I inadvertently settled down for a nap? It seemed so out of character for me to doze off in the middle of a workday, especially with the responsibilities weighing heavily on my shoulders.
As I continued to wrestle with the fragments of my memory, the door creaked open, and in walked Dr. Wyatt, her expression a mixture of concern and relief.
“D-Dr. Wyatt, I’m awake!” I exclaimed, the words tumbling out before I could stop them. Instantly, I regretted my enthusiastic tone, realizing it might imply I had been slacking off more than I intended to admit.
To my surprise, she didn’t appear angry or disappointed. Instead, she regarded me with a sympathetic gaze, her eyes softening.
“It’s alright, Annette. I know today has been particularly challenging for you. Why don’t you go ahead and head home early?” she suggested gently, her voice laced with understanding.
Jake was standing just inside the threshold, arms crossed tightly over his chest, his feet firmly planted as if he had been anticipating my arrival for ages.
Seeing him there caught me off guard. He should have still been at the Alpha Headquarters, and it struck me as odd that he was waiting right at the door like a guard dog.
A sinking feeling settled in my stomach as the realization dawned on me: he had indeed been waiting for me, and not in a casual way.
Before he even uttered a word, I could sense the storm brewing. I was acutely aware that I was in deep trouble.
Jake remained silent, his gaze piercing through me, as I closed the front door behind me. A wild thought flitted through my mind—what if I just turned around and ran? But where would I go?
