**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 299**
**Chapter 299**
The weight of secrecy hung in the air like a thick fog, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was treading on thin ice by meeting Annette away from prying eyes. Jake’s animosity towards me was an ever-looming shadow, a reminder that any moment spent with Annette was bound to stir his disapproval. I had always known Jake harbored resentment, and the thought of him finding out about our clandestine meeting made my heart race.
“I have an idea,” I suggested, trying to keep my tone light. “What if we went out for dinner? There’s a lovely little restaurant within Gray’s pack. It’s quiet, intimate—a perfect setting for us to enjoy a pleasant evening.”
The words hung in the air, and I realized how much they sounded like an invitation for a date. Yet, I hoped we could sidestep that label, at least for now. This was more about reassurance—an opportunity to show Annette that I was being truthful, that my intentions were pure, and that I wanted nothing to do with Claire and her elaborate ceremony.
Deep down, I felt a pressing need to prove this to Annette. It was as if an invisible thread connected us, compelling me to share my sincerity, to bridge the gap that had formed between us.
Annette hesitated, her gaze drifting as she weighed my proposal. The silence stretched between us, each second feeling like an eternity. Finally, after what felt like an agonizing wait, she responded.
“Alright. That sounds nice.”
A wave of relief washed over me, and I couldn’t help but smile. “Great.”
My words were quickly drowned out by the jubilant cheers of Amy and Stacy, who seemed to be more thrilled about the prospect of our meeting than Annette and I were. They exchanged high-fives, as if they were the masterminds behind this almost-date.
I felt a pang of guilt for not correcting them, but seeing Annette’s smile, the way her laughter danced in the air, made it worth it. Her icy demeanor towards me had begun to thaw, replaced by a flicker of warmth in her eyes that hadn’t been there all day.
The uncomfortable weight that had settled in my chest began to dissipate, and for the first time in what felt like ages, I could take a deep breath without feeling constricted. It was astonishing how profoundly her coldness had affected me. I much preferred this version of her—radiant and happy, which in turn made me smile back at her.
After we reached a mutual understanding, Annette engaged in conversation with the girls, while I slipped into the hallway to signal Jeffery and Sienna that we were ready for the next phase of our appointment—memory therapy.
They caught my signal and approached, and as I held the door open for them, I noticed the light blue potion in Jeffery’s hands. He cradled it as if it were the most precious thing in the world, akin to how a parent would hold their child.
“What’s that?” I inquired, curiosity piqued once they were inside and I had closed the door behind me.
“This,” Jeffery said, lifting the bottle with a flourish, “is meant to be the solution to everything. It’s a concoction I devised after years of intense research and study. I’ve tested it thoroughly—well, perhaps not on a human subject—but I assure you, it’s completely harmless!”
Annette regarded him with a patient smile. “And what exactly does it do?”
Jeffery adjusted his glasses, his excitement palpable. “If you take this potion, it should unlock all the memories of your past. It’s designed to eliminate the mental barriers that have been preventing you from remembering. Once those obstacles are removed, your memories should come rushing back.”
He cleared his throat, a hint of nervousness creeping in. “It might be a bit overwhelming at first, but we’ll be right here to help you navigate through everything as it returns.”
“Just like that?” Annette asked, her brow furrowing with skepticism. “I’ll remember everything?”
“Yes,” Jeffery affirmed, confidence radiating from him. As he stepped closer, he uncorked the bottle and carefully placed it in her hands. “You simply need to drink it. Don’t let a single drop go to waste.”
I gently placed a hand on each of the girls’ shoulders, urging them to step back and give Annette the space she needed. My heart raced with uncertainty. What if today was the day we discovered whether Annette was truly Amelia?
“Are you ready to remember?” Jeffery asked, his voice steady.
“Yes,” Annette replied, determination etched on her face as she lifted the bottle to her lips.

**Damien’s POV**
All eyes were glued to Annette as she prepared to drink from the bottle, anticipation crackling in the air. She took a deep breath, then downed the potion in one swift motion. After delicately wiping her mouth with her thumb and forefinger, she handed the empty bottle back to Jeffery.
He had promised immediate results, so I held my breath, a tumult of hope and anxiety swirling in my chest. I yearned for Annette to be Amelia, and the longing was almost painful. But if she wasn’t… I steeled myself against the disappointment that threatened to crash over me.
Moments ticked by, each second stretching into eternity.
Annette blinked several times, confusion knitting her brow. “Is something supposed to happen?” she asked, her voice laced with uncertainty.
Jeffery’s expression mirrored her confusion. “Yes? It should be instantaneous,” he replied, his own worry creeping in.
Sienna stepped closer to Annette, her brow furrowing in concern. “Do you… feel anything? Remember anything?”
Annette shut her eyes tightly, brows furrowing as if she were straining to pull something from the depths of her mind. When she opened them again, her frown deepened.
“I don’t feel any different,” she admitted, disappointment coloring her tone. “And I don’t remember a single thing.”
Jeffery seemed to deflate, his shoulders slumping as he processed her words. “How could this be?” he muttered, frustration lacing his voice. “I followed all the protocols… the tests were all positive.”
“Maybe there’s a variable you overlooked,” Sienna suggested gently.
“No… everything was perfect…” Jeffery’s distress was palpable, more profound than Annette’s own. He turned to her, genuine regret in his eyes. “I’m so sorry, Annette. I truly believed this would work. I had complete faith in it. Even now… I can’t fathom what went wrong. I need to return to the lab immediately to investigate.”
“It’s alright,” Annette reassured him, her voice soothing. “Maybe it will work in time. Perhaps it’s not as immediate as you thought?”
