Chapter 339
Damien’s POV
“No,” I said flatly. Because that didn’t seem like enough, I continued, “Under no circumstances are you to come here, do you understand? Absolutely not.”
“So you will bring Stacy to me?” she asked without missing a beat, making me realize my mistake far too late. ” Good. I will be expecting you as soon as possible.”
“I never agreed to that,” I said.
“Well, if I can’t go there, then you have to come to me,” Claire said. “It’s really as simple as that.”
Nothing about this was simple.
“Stacy has to agree,” I said, and that was the hill I would die on. I would never take my daughter anywhere against her will except for school and the dentist. But as a parent, it was my job to know and provide what was best for her. Seeing Claire was not on that list.
“Fine,” Claire said begrudgingly, and I felt a small measure of victory knowing that at least my tone this time had conveyed my seriously. I didn’t play games when it came to my children. “But I hope you remember I am a member of the pack council now. If you allow me to wither and die, it will reflect poorly on you.”
Unfortunately, most members of my pack didn’t know Claire as well as I did. They remembered her parents, recognized the goodwill of her family name, and projected that good onto Claire as well, even though she had done nothing to earn it.
“I will not force my daughter to see you,” I said.
“I’ll be waiting,” Claire replied, like she hadn’t heard me at all, and hung up.
I lowered my phone, pleased to finally be off the phone with her, even if the conversation left me annoyed and incredibly frustrated.
“Damien?” Annette asked from the doorway. When she saw I wasn’t on the phone, she came closer. “Is everything alright? The girls and I were worried.”
“I’m sorry,” I told her, and returned my phone to my pocket. “I didn’t mean to worry you. The call was from the office. I thought it might be an emergency…”
“Was it?” she asked.
I debated whether to tell her the truth of it. I didn’t want Annette anywhere near Claire’s orbit, but if Stacy was involved, Annette would likely insist on knowing what was going on.
Maybe it was just better to tell her the truth, than have her find out on her own what was going on. I had made that mistake many times in the past with Amelia. I wouldn’t continue to make the same mistake now with Annette.
“That was Claire,” I said.
At the mention of her name, Annette’s entire face changed. It hardened, closed off a bit, and she frowned. I understood that feeling deep down to my bones. Claire had that effect on people, myself included.
“What did she want?” Annette asked.
“I’m sure you remember she has various medical conditions. One is a sort of weakness that she believes would eventually drain her of all her strength and kill her. For whatever the reason, only having Stacy, her biological
1/3
child, nearby helps restore her.”
Annette frowned even harder than before. “I’ve never heard of anything like that before.”
While I respected Annette’s healing abilities, I unfortunately had proof this time. “Many pack healers have agreed that this method works.”
Annette narrowed her eyes ever so slightly, showing some of her doubt. “And you agree to this?”
“Only if Stacy does,” I said. “Otherwise, I would keep them worlds apart.” I sighed. “Claire’s parents were good people, heroes of the pack. For them, I promised not to send their daughter away, which would be a death sentence in her condition, or otherwise have her punished by death. They wanted to see the best in her.”
“I can understand a parents’ love,” Annette said. “But not why you should carry the weight of it. Claire made her choices, shouldn’t she have to pay for her crimes?”
“The rest of the pack didn’t see it that way,” I replied. “Instead, they celebrated her being lifted onto the pack council. She’s untouchable now. If I wanted to try to exile her, I would face stern opposition. That’s not even considering the deals I had to make with her to have her help Stacy…’
))
I didn’t even want to think about the vows to the Moon Goddess I had to make. It had been worth it, to save Stacy’s life, but I would be suffering the ramifications for a long time to come.
“Well, if there is no way out of this, then I would like to go with you and Stacy,” I said. “I want to see this treatment for myself.”
“No,” I replied quickly. “I’m not putting you anywhere near that woman.”
“She’s probably up to something, Damien. If I can see that she isn’t being truthful -”
“If she’s up to something, then that’s all the more reason for you to stay away from her -”
“But if I -”
The doorbell rang at just that moment, cutting us both off and ending our argument.
“Are you expecting company?” she asked me.
“No.” I had a very bad feeling I already knew who was at the door. If so, Claire hadn’t given me much time to make my decision. She must have already been planning to come here as soon as she hung up the phone with me.
“Stay here,” I told Annette.
Then I turned and walked into the foyer. A servant was there, ready to answer the door, but I dismissed her, wanting to do it myself.
Grabbing the handle, I pulled open the door.
I wasn’t shocked at all to see Claire there, just on the other side of the door in her wheelchair.
“I was in the neighborhood and decided to make things easier,” she said.
Before I could reply, Annette followed me into the foyer. Claire saw her before I could event think to block her view. The two looked at each other, and Claire, once she got over her initial surprise, smiled.
“Well, how nice. You have company.”
