Chapter 342
Amelia’s POV
“Annette,” Damien said. There was some empathy in his voice, but I knew, just from him saying my name, that he was not going to allow me to talk to Sienna.
I probably knew that even without asking. After all, the only reason I had been taken into his pack in the first place was to get me out of the way while Sienna faced judgement. It would go against Jake’s direct wishes, as well as likely Damien’s, to allow me to return and speak to Sienna.
“It’s not a good idea,” he told me now. “Just, forget her entirely. Put her out of your mind. You are safe now, will receive her judgment, and she will never be a part of your life anymore.”
“She’s still my sister,” I said softly.
she
He lightly shook his head. “No. She doesn’t get to keep that title after what she did to Amelia, and to you. Let her go, Annette.”
I could see that Damien was only saying these things because he cared for me. Not wanting him to worry, I said, ” I’ll try.”
That was a lie, though. Already I was planning on watching that trial tomorrow. If I couldn’t ask Sienna what I wanted to know myself, then maybe the pack lawyers would do so. And perhaps, under oath, Sienna might be inclined to reveal the truth.
“It’s been a long day,” Damien said. “I’m sure you are exhausted, especially with that memory attack.”
“Are you sending me to bed like the kids?” I asked, attempting for humor but I knew it came off flat. There was nothing funny about what had been revealed today and any attempt at levity felt disingenuous and flat.
“I’m sorry,” he said, lowering his gaze. “I don’t mean to boss you around. You are a guest in my home. I just… care for you.”
At that, my heart skipped a beat. “You do?”
He looked up again, right into my gaze, and I could see the muted pain in his, the loss and longing he always carried around.
“I’m doing my best to protect you,” Damien said. “I failed in the past at so many things. I protected Amelia physically but not emotionally. I locked her in a tower, and did nothing to guard her heart. With you, Annette, I’m trying to protect both your body and your heart. Talking to Sienna will only hurt you.”
With a confession as earnest as this, I could not speak against him, not to argue, not to tell him I’m not the same as my adopted sister. I couldn’t even comfort him, not knowing what to say to such a thing.
His hurt also caused me pain, and I found that in this moment, the only thing I could do was nod.
“I’ll go to my room now,” I said, and stood.
He watched me but didn’t say another word. I felt his eyes on me the whole way to the stairs, when I turned the corner and was no longer in his line of sight.
That night, I dreamed I was in a place I had never been before. A hotel room, I thought, though I quickly stepped out of it and onto a balcony that overlooked a street.
My body moved on its own, the motions familiar, but scary, as I had no control. I hoisted my legs over the railing

of the balcony and began to climb down.
I closed my eyes, afraid of falling as my body took a route I knew Inexplicably that it had gone down before
I only dared to open my eyes again when I felt the familiar feel of concrete sidewalk under my feet. Sienna was there, smiling at me. She waved toward the open back door of a sedan. She said something to me, but I couldn’t hear her. All sounds were muddled, like I was walking around underwater.
I moved into the back of the sedan. The door closed, and the car started driving away.
The driver, a middle-aged man, looked at me through the rearview mirror.
I blinked, and suddenly I was running through the woods, racing away from that same sedan. The man, that driver, was stalking toward me. I saw his face clearly, my heart thundering in fear.
He was going to kill me.
I tripped, falling down on the grass and dead leaves of the forest floor.
My heart cried out for Damien, but he wasn’t the one who answered.
Instead, I heard the howl of my own wolf, Serena.
The dream world turned to black in a flash, and I opened my eyes.
I was in my bedroom in Damien’s estate, in my own bed, staring up at the slowly moving blades of the ceiling fan. The fear was still coursing through me so strongly that I was paralyzed with it. It took several long moments for my heart to slow, for my breathing to become more normal.
When it did, I finally pushed myself upright on the bed.
Yet that man’s face… my attacker… remained burned on my thoughts. I would never forget him.
For the rest of the morning, I wondered if this had been the moment of my attack, which had caused the loss of my memory. Yet… for some reason… I felt like I had instead been relieving the death of my adopted sister Amelia.
I had no evidence of this. I only knew what I felt. Yet I couldn’t shake that feeling.
As I headed down to the kitchen to get some coffee, I was so distracted, I missed the mug and splashed coffee all over the counter. Damien arrived at just that moment, and seeing what I was doing, came over to me with worry and a towel.
“Are you alright?” he asked me.
“I am…” I said. “I’m sorry. I just… I had a bad dream.”
“After yesterday, it makes sense.” Damien cleaned up the mess I made, then poured me a fresh cup of coffee. He placed the fresh cup in my hands. “Take it easy today, alright? Just rest.”
I nodded, numbly, but found I couldn’t be silent. “Damien. When Amelia… was attacked… killed…” I looked up at him and saw the conflict in his eyes. “How did it happen?”
Damien was quiet for a long moment, and he suddenly seemed so very far away.
I waited patiently for him to answer, but he shook his head. “It’s better if you don’t know. When I think about it myself, I… Well, it’s better if you don’t have to live with that knowledge.”
He lightly patted me on the shoulder. He tried to smile but it didn’t last. “Take care of yourself, Annette. I’ll be
