Chapter 387

Amelia’s POV

They mysterious man in the distance held my gaze for what must have only been a few seconds, but what felt like an eternity. All the while, a small alarm in my mind rang and rang, like it was trying to tell me something. But all memories of the past five years were slippery, and I could hold onto nothing long enough to understand my own discomfort at seeing this man.

I only remembered that he was someone I had known. The how and the why totally eluded me.

Then, before I could place him, he finally looked away and continued down the sidewalk, disappearing down the

street.

I waited until I couldn’t see him anymore before turning around again. In that time, in addition to making certain that he was gone, I tried to gather my courage.

The entire encounter, even though it was brief, at a distance, and through a window, left me feeling shaken. I didn’t want to turn and face the pack wives again until I was fully composed.

They would sense my weakness as sharks scented blood in the water.

In the past, they had judged me harshly. In the present, though I had been able to coax them to my side, I knew they were likely watching me, waiting for me to mess up or to show weakness, and then they would pounce.

I had to continue to be strong, lest they try to push me over again.

I was unnerved, but not weak. I’d never again let anyone treat me like they had in the past. I didn’t care what else I had going on in my life.

Six years might have passed in the blink of an eye for me, but I still felt different, more confident and proud. The changes felt good inside of me. I wasn’t going back to the way I was before, no matter what.

No matter who that man was.

He was outside of the building and I was in it, protected at the doors by guards. Whoever this man was, he wouldn’t be able to get me unless he wanted to fight his way in. Alone, we wouldn’t get very far.

I had to put this uneasy feeling out of my mind. I was safe here.

Whoever that man was, he couldn’t hurt me here, while I was protected.

“Something outside get your attention, Luna?” asked one of the wives.

Turning, I pulled on a bright smile. They wouldn’t know it was fake. “I thought I saw someone I knew, but I was mistaken.”

“Ah,” said the woman. “It must be frustrating to not be able to tell if you know someone or not.’

“I’m adjusting,” I said. “But I don’t think I actually knew this person, so it’s fine. We should get back to work.”

“Yes, Luna,” the woman said and obeyed.

At the office, Keegan stood at the other side of my desk, looking serious. “Alpha, permission to speak freely.”

For the past six years, Keegan had been a loyal servant and Beta, and though he was young, I trusted his judgement in most things. At the very least, he gave a perspective different than my own. As Alpha, it was crucial for me to be able to see situations from different perspectives.

“You may,” I said.

“Word has come in from Jake’s pack that pack Councilwoman Claire’s trial will be publicized. It is sure to be a spectacle. All of the news channels are certain to cover it, and I’m certain it will be a hot topic among the pack, including among the higher society,” Keegan said.

He was getting at something, trying to make a point, I couldn’t quite see at this moment. Yet, as I thought, I realized what he was likely driving at.

Amelia.

“It will be difficult to fully protect Amelia from the discussion and coverage,” Keegan said. “Forgive me if I overstep by saying this, Alpha, but perhaps you should talk to her about this. That way she can learn the news gently from you, and not be caught by surprise by a callous word from a pack member or from the news on television.”

“I’ve already blocked the television channels that will be running the coverage,” I said. I had already given this a fair amount of thought. “None of this should be an issue.”

“She’s planning and attending banquets now,” Keegan said. “She spends a lot of time with the pack wives and others. Are you certain that no one will mention this to her?”

“I would hope they would have better sense,” I replied. “Especially since we’ve made public statements about her foggy memory of the past six years.

))

Keegan lowered his head. “Forgive me, Alpha. I know it is not my place, but as Amelia is our Luna now, I strive to serve her as I do you. I just wonder if it would be better if she was prepared to face the questions that might find her.”

With how persistent Keegan was being, I could see he was adamant about this. But surely none would be fool enough to actually bring this up with Amelia herself?

“It will be fine, Keegan. Protecting Amelia is my job, and I will not fail again,” I said, putting an end to this

conversation.

Keegan nodded, and returned to work.

As did I, though the conversation stayed with me, even after I returned home to my loving family that night.

Amelia was playing dolls with the girls, and all of them seemed to be having a great time. The house was filled with laughter and joy, perhaps in a way it had never been before. Before, Amelia and I had been in love, but this level of warmth was entirely different. We were a full, wonderful family now.

Watching them, I thought of bringing up the things Claire had done in the past, at least enough to prepare Amelia in case she did overhear something shocking.

Yet, I would pull back on those thoughts before seeing them through. Amelia was happy and content now. If she

knew even a hint of what she had suffered in the past, would it change things for her? Would she stop feeling so safe? Would she learn that she had to always watch her back?

I didn’t want her to have to live like that.
