**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 42**
**Chapter 42**
**Amelia’s POV**
The drive around the pack felt rejuvenating, a breath of fresh air that I desperately needed to reclaim a sense of myself. It was all too easy to become ensnared in the web of my own helplessness, a sensation I loathed with every fiber of my being. Ever since Damien’s menacing threats had loomed over me, and I had reluctantly agreed to stay within the safety of Jake’s pack, I had felt adrift, as if I were merely a pawn in a game of fate, stripped of any control over my own life.
But was that truly the case? No, it wasn’t. The very fact that I found myself here, nestled within the warmth of Jake’s pack, was a testament to my resilience. I had managed to escape a dire situation. I had fled. And now, being sheltered by Jake’s pack wasn’t a mark of weakness; it was an act of kindness that they had chosen to bestow upon me.
In a bid to reclaim my sense of worth, I felt an overwhelming desire to reciprocate that kindness. Financially, I was at a loss, and every time I attempted to tidy up a bit, the maids would gently yet firmly usher me away, insisting that I shouldn’t exert myself given my delicate condition.
They were probably right, I mused. With my fragile pregnancy, it was wise to avoid any strenuous activity.
Cleaning and gardening were out of the question, but cooking? Ah! Perhaps I could express my gratitude by preparing a grand meal for Jake and his family. In doing so, I might even win over Sienna’s affections, just a little bit more.
Cooking had never been my forte, but it was a passion that brought me joy.
When I proposed this idea to Jake, his face lit up with a smile that warmed my heart.
“I would love to eat a meal cooked by you,” he replied, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. He gestured to the maids, instructing them to guide me to the kitchen. “Get her anything she needs.”
Although there was already a cook on duty, she was incredibly supportive upon hearing my plans. “I will offer whatever assistance I can, without getting in the way, of course,” she said, a playful wink accompanying her words.
My heart swelled with gratitude for her, for the maids, and for Jake. Whatever dish I concocted would need to be hearty enough to feed everyone. Ideally, I wanted to prepare something for the entire pack, but that was likely too ambitious. I decided to focus on the household members, including the servants, who deserved a treat as well.
When I explained my intentions to the cook, she initially tried to dissuade me from including the servants, but I stood firm in my resolve. Once she recognized that I was unwavering, she led me to the shelf filled with cookbooks.
