Chapter 424
Amelia’s POV
During the day, when I wasn’t arguing with the house wives, I tried to find other ways to keep myself busy. I read a lot, or learned to bake new recipes in the kitchen. The cook was very patient with me, and even helped me with some of the harder recipes.
As time went on, more and more, I began to notice that the girls were appearing around the corner of doorways or sometimes walking straight into whatever room I was in. They were supposed to be taking part in their tutoring lessons at this time. It seemed like one or the other was always sneaking away to peek in on me.
At some point, I started taking notes, writing times in the margins of my book or on my recipe cards. I marked how often I saw them and when.
At the end of the day, as the girls were relieved from their studies and went to play, I walked with the tutor toward the front door and showed him my findings.
“Yes,” he said. “I meant to talk to you about this. I’m not in the habit of denying my students bathroom breaks. I know emergencies can happen, and I would never want to punish a child for that. But I have noticed frequent requests among both girls.”
He looked closer at my notes, even comparing them with his own. “Yes, this matches what I observed as well. If they were coming to see you instead of going to the bathroom as I suspect, then there may be something going on outside of bathroom emergencies.”
He didn’t say what he really thought they were doing, but he didn’t have to. As the girls and I were in danger, and the girls knew about the danger, it was very clear, at least to me, that they were sneaking away from their studies to check on me.
“Your girls are very brave and strong-willed,” the tutor said. “They love you very much.”
With that, I knew he thought the same as I did, and I nodded in agreement while also smiling with gratitude at his kindness. I liked him as their teacher. He could see the good in them more so than some of the teachers at their school.
After he left, I checked behind me, only to see Stacy sneakily watching me from around the corner of the hallway.
For now, I pretended not to notice her.
Remembering the girls having fallen asleep on the stairs, I started to wonder now if they had truly been staying awake waiting for their father, or if they had just been watching me. That would explain why Stacy’s baseball bat was at her side.
They must have been wanting to protect me. My heart ached, so proud of my little protectors while also feeling great regret that they felt the need to protect me themselves.
I waited to speak with them about this until just before dinner, when I caught them both again watching me from the hallway. I was supposed to be going the other way, to enter the dining room. Instead, I stepped into the hallway, facing them.
“Girls, what are you doing?” I asked.

Stacy had her baseball bat again, which she quickly hid behind her back.
“Nothing,” Stacy said.
Amy worried her bottom lip with her teeth and lowered her head, looking somewhat guilty.
“You aren’t in trouble,” I told them. “I just want to know.” When more silence greeted me, I continued. “You’ve been keeping an eye on me, haven’t you? Even during your lessons…”
“Claire doesn’t like you,” Stacy said. “She might try to hurt you, or get someone else to.” Her hands tightened on her baseball bat. “We aren’t going to let that happen.”
Amy nodded. “We’re going to protect you, Mommy.”
My heart swelled with love, and I immediately kneeled down to talk to the girls on their level, not wanting to tower above them in this beautiful yet still bittersweet moment.
“My darlings,” I said. “I’m the one who is supposed to protect you.”
Amy shook her head, while Stacy spoke up, “Daddy protects us, but he isn’t here.”
“I can protect you in his stead,” I said.
“But you don’t have a wolf, Mommy,” Amy said, making it sound matter-of-fact. I supposed it was, but it still stung to have it pointed out like that, especially when it was being used in the case against me and why I couldn’t even protect my own children.
“I can still hold my own,” I assured them. “You haven’t seen me fight. I’m scrappy. And when it comes to protecting my family, I can be ruthless.”
They nodded as I spoke, but Stacy continued to insist that she carry her bat around. Nothing I said seemed to be able to convince them that I didn’t need watching. Everything always circled around to, “Daddy’s not here.”
I started to worry about the effect Damien’s absence was having on the girls.
And maybe on me too. It had been several days now since I had last seen him, let alone talk to him. I’d tried leaving messages on his phone, both voice and text, but they had all gone unanswered.
For the length of our dinner, I kept a brave face on for the girls, talking to them as brightly as ever while I buried my worry deep down inside of myself. But after dinner was done, as they went to play nearby, occasionally checking on me, I went into the kitchen with my phone and tried to call Damien.
The call rang and rang, just as it had done last time, but Damien never answered.
I didn’t leave a message. It became clear to me before that, whether or not I left a message, Damien wasn’t going to reply.
He was dedicated to the hunt, and I didn’t want to judge him for that. But it was hard to not feel like he was neglecting his family, especially with the girls starting to try to step in for his absence.
If calling him wasn’t going to get me anywhere, then maybe I could go a different route to try to get a hold of
him.
Ending the call, I searched for a different number. This time, I called Damien’s Beta Keegan.
