Chapter 440

Claire’s POV

“Ian, you will not blow this for the rest of us,” I said curtly, so irritated I could hardly think straight. It was as if he wasn’t even trying to make this work. “Just calm down and do this right. It’s like you don’t want revenge at all.”

“Of course I want revenge,” Ian said. “I wouldn’t even be trying if I didn’t.”

“Are you trying? Because it doesn’t seem like you are trying.”

“This is demeaning, Claire, especially for you and me,” he said, ignoring the slight huff of offense Sienna made. “How can we be expected to lower ourselves beneath our station?”

“We do what we have to do to achieve our goals,” I told him flat out. “If you actually want revenge, you have to put in the effort, even if that means doing things that are beneath you.”

Ian actually pouted, his bottom lip coming forward. Gods, what did Sienna even see in this man? All I wanted to do in this moment was smack him. How could he be so pompous that he couldn’t even see he was sabotaging us with this kind of holier-than-thou behavior?

Sienna, though she had just been offended, seemed to get over that fairly quickly. She turned to Ian. Her voice soft, and full of reverence, she said, “You will always be a prince to me.”

He seemed surprised by her words, blinking twice, his face losing some of its usual pomp. He recovered quickly enough, dashing his gaze to the side. “I don’t want to be a prince,” he muttered. “I’m a King.”

Sienna didn’t seem to hear him. She just continued looking up at him with hope and obvious love in her eyes.

I almost felt bad for her, for how hard up she was for him, and how little he seemed to care about her in reply. Inwardly, I knew it was only because of my pushing that he was entertaining her crush to begin with.

But, she was a grown woman and could make her own bad choices. No matter my interference, she should have known better.

“Fine,” Ian said then. “I suppose I can play along.”

I startled slightly, caught in my own surprise.

Beside Ian, Sienna turned away from him, likely hiding the small smirk curling her lips.

Huh. Maybe she wasn’t so pathetic after all. She had just masterfully manipulated Ian, using his arrogant and conceited nature to lure him into actually going along with our plan. I had thought Ian the mastermind in that pseudo-relationship, but Sienna just turned that idea on its head.

Who was manipulating who?

I looked at Sienna with new respect. Maybe I needed to keep an eye on her, after all.

From that point forward, though he still complained, Ian at least put in the effort to try to act like a servant.

Even Ruth, with her critical eye, had less feedback than before. “It’s not great, but so long as you don’t draw attention to yourself, it will do.”

As she went back to brewing the potions that we would need that would help disguise our features, I made contact with my connections, describing how we needed a patron to help guide us over the border.

With good luck, I was referenced to one of the councilmember’s wives who had been in Jake’s pack on vacation and was set to return home that very evening. The councilmember was loyal to me, having tried to speak up for me to Damien in an effort to move my trial to my home pack.
