Chapter 473
Sienna was acting differently here in the rogue territories. She seemed more confident, smiling more and saying hello to everyone we passed as we walked together to the Rogue King’s house to meet him for a personal tour.
We’d been here a few days by now but it was still a good gesture for him to acknowledge us. Well, I should correct. For him to acknowledge me.
Sienna had been more or less at his side from the start. She and Ruth immediately stepped in as his family, and they were both being treated like royalty from everyone here.
That was probably why Sienna was so happy.
Meanwhile, I was being treated like a fresh outcast, someone low on the ladder, barely acknowledged.
I didn’t care much for this role reversal. Claire and I, with our high-born backgrounds should have been the ones to receive attention and reverence.
Despite whatever else she was, Ruth had been a servant for several decades. Sienna had only been pretending to be high-born. In truth, she had been the daughter of a servant and a rogue. Whether he was a high ranking rogue or not made little difference.
Any rogue was automatically beneath me in terms of status.
That was the way things had always been up until this moment. That was the way I wanted them to continue.
But, when Sienna smiled and laughed, as annoyed as I was at the topsy-turvy rules here, I felt myself… drawn to her. She truly seemed to be glowing here, as if she had been muted everywhere else. I found myself staring. It was difficult to look away from her when she was like this.
As we reached Richard’s house, he came down the stairs two at a time. At once, he hugged Sienna, then he held out his hand for me.
“I hope you’ve been treating my girl well, yes?” he asked me. His grip was firm. Despite the smile on his face, his eyes had a sharp edge that told me while he was being polite, this was something of a warning.
If I stopped treating his daughter well, I’d likely be even lower in rank than I already was. Maybe they would have me leave their town entirely.
“I’m doing my best,” I said.
“He’s doing great, Richard,” Sienna said. “I’ve already told you I love him.”
“It doesn’t hurt to be too careful,” Richard said.
He gave my hand one tighter squeeze. Unlike my soft moisturized skin, his palms were rough and calloused. I didn’t like how that made me feel less like a man.
Then, finally, he released his grip and looked back at Sienna. “How many times do I have to ask you to call me Dad?”
“Sorry… Dad. I’m trying.”
“There’s no need for apologies. I just want you to feel comfortable.”

“I am,” Sienna said, but then amended, “I’m getting there.”
“In time, all will be well again,” he said. “Come. Let’s start our tour.”
Most of the places Richard showed us, I had already seen from the outside. Though I supposed it was nice to see the insides of some of them, and be introduced to the owners.
We went to a grocery store, which was mostly filled with fruits and vegetables from local rogue farmers, though also had some eggs and meats from rogue ranchers that were further away.
“Nothing has a price on it,” I noticed.
“We take care of each other here,” Richard said.
Next we visited a hair salon, then a repair shop/carpenter, and finally a coffee shop.
Unlike the other locations, barista at the coffee shop had a tip jar.
“She sneaks over the border regularly to retrieve coffee beans,” Richard explain. “The tips are used for the cost.”
We ended our tour in front a news stand. From what I could tell, no one in this town had electricity, everyone using lanterns and typewriters and the rest. The news stand was similar. There were no televisions here, but instead crudely crafted newspapers on various topics.
One of them immediately caught my eye when I spotted my family’s name. Snatching one off the pile, I lifted it to read.
