Chapter 478
Amelia’s POV
25 Hous
When Damien came back from the prison, he didn’t speak to anyone, not even me. He just walked straight into his office where Alpha King Benedict and his staff were waiting, and closed the door.
While I attended to my other duties, I kept my eye on that door. Eventually, I had to go to a different level. When I came back, the door was open. Alpha King Benedict and his staff were still inside, but Damien was gone.
Keegan looked worried.
“Where’s Damien?” I asked.
“He went for a walk,” Keegan said. “You’ll probably find him in the gardens behind the building.”
I knew the spot Keegan was referring too. The Luna was supposed to be in charge of the space, but during my house arrest, the pack wives had been doing a good job with it as loathe as I was to admit that. The flowers were beautiful and healthy, though I suspected the gardeners did most of the work.
“I’ll need a minute,” I said.
Keegan nodded. “He needs you more than the paperwork.”
With that, I left Keegan and went downstairs. I left through the backdoor of the office building and walked out into the gardens. Damien was standing on the edge of the gardens, not looking at the flowers but out at the main street of his pack.
The main street was truly the central hub of commerce. It was busy at all hours, but especially during work hours, as people went about their business. He stared out at the people now, entirely lost to his own thoughts.
I walked to his side, not saying anything yet. Instead, I looked out as he did, seeing everyone moving about, going along with their day.
It was probably a normal Tuesday for most.
I waited for Damien to speak. We stood in comfortable silence for a full thirty seconds, and when he did start to speak, he did not look at me, keeping his gaze straight ahead at the people.
His people.
“The rogue prisoner made things very clear to me. This isn’t just an idea of a war any longer. The rogues have been planning and training for years to try to take our packs for themselves,” he said. “They want to overthrow Alpha King Benedict and install their own Rogue King.”
A hint of fear shot through me. “Surely Alpha King Benedict should get to safety then. Back in his palace?”
“He refuses to go,” Damien said. “I’ve already tried to convince him. He doesn’t want to show that kind of cowardice. But it could be his hubris that brings this cauldron to its boiling point.”
He fell silent again, and during the pause, I tried to think of some kind of solution. Yet, as hard as I tried to think of something that would aid us or even just to help Damien feel better, I couldn’t.
Again, I felt like a less-than-successful Luna.

Damien continued, “War is coming for all of us. We’ve been at peace for so long. Many of my pack have never known way, but now they will. The children… Amy and Stacy…” He closed his eyes and dropped his head. “I cannot keep the reality from them. War is coming right to our doorstep. And if we lose…”
“We won’t lose,” I told him flat out. “You are om Alpha, and I believe in you more than I believe in anyone or anything else. We will survive this, Damien, and it will be because you are the one who is leading us.”
His eyes opened again, and he looked over at me. I watched as some of the uncertainty cleared from his eyes, and at last, I felt a tiny amount of pleasure, knowing that I had helped him recover his confidence.
It made me want to explore my own.
“You will lead us,” I reaffirmed, this time adding, “And I’ll be right beside you.”
He blinked. “Metaphorically, yes, I will carry you with me everywhere.”
“No,” I said. “I’ll be beside you in person too. Right there on the battlefield.”
At once, his whole demeanor shifted, hardening. His eyes went cold. “No you won’t be. You will take the children and run as far from here as you can.”
“But-
“I will never allow you to fight, Amelia. You can’t even shift.”
That hurt more than it probably should have. He was right, after all. “That doesn’t make me helpless!”
“It does when you are on a battlefield full of rogue werewolves.” His voice was stern, leaving no room for conversation or argument.
As much as I wanted to push back, I might as well have been pushing against a brick wall.
I looked away, likely seeming to him the very personage of obedience. Inwardly, I was making my own plans to find a way to train in secret.
In the afternoon, just before it was time to go home, Damien and I stepped out into that same garden again, but this time it was filled with reporters. A small platform was set up with a podium and the reporters’ microphones.
Damien and I stepped onto that platform. He kissed me in front of the cameras. Then he left me standing behind him as he moved to the podium and adjusted the microphones to the appropriate height.
“You know by now, from our press release, that things have become very tense with the rogues in the wild territories along our border,” he said, speaking clearly and with authority – his Alpha voice. “War, unfortunately, is now imminent.”
Some of the reporters started asking questions, all at once. If Damien could discern understandable from the cacophony, I wasn’t sure. But he held up his hand and they fell silent.
“I am calling on every able-bodied pack member to begin training. Training sights will be set up in various locations – which we are providing to the press. High-ranking and experienced members of my guards will be leading these trainings. The intension is to prepare us all for battle.”
He took a breath. The reporters didn’t say a word this time, waiting.
