Chapter 487
“You’ll see,” Lillian said. “Give it time.”
I didn’t know what to believe, but before I could even spend any more time on it, the phone rang in my office. I couldn’t rush to get it so I directed my Beta to answer for me as I more slowly made my way there.
When I arrived, the Beta held the phone out. “It’s Alpha Damien, Sir.”
A call from Damien, expected or otherwise, wasn’t unusual nowadays, especially with Uncle Benedict residing in his pack. The three of us were taking point on defending the crux of the rogue attack, with the other packs focusing more on preserving their own borders.
The dire threat of the rogues was in the wind, and every Alpha could sense it. I understood their decision to want to protect their own borders. If we gave up the front line, every pack would be at risk.
I took the phone from the Beta and brought it to my ear. “Good morning, Damien.”
“Not so good,” he said, his voice tight.
I gripped my cane hard, my heart starting to pound. “Has the war started already?”
“No,” Damien said, and I tried to calm down. But Damien wasn’t an overly emotional man. He wouldn’t sound this pissed off and desperate without good reason.
“What’s happening?” I asked. “Give it to me straight before I worry myself into a hospital bed.” That wasn’t a joke. It could actually happen given my bothersome wound.
“Amelia remembers.”
Thank the Gods my office chair was behind me because when I went down it was there to catch me. Yet, even as my body weakened, I kept clutching that phone, kept it to my ear.
“How much does she remember?” I asked.
Mom appeared in the doorway looking as shocked, pale, and worried as I felt.
“Everything,” Damien said.
“Shit,” I cursed. “We have to get down there. We have to fix this.”
“She doesn’t want to see anyone,” Damien said. “Trying only makes things worse.”
I imagined he would be the one to know, as he had likely tried various things already. I swallowed hard. Giving up the fight wasn’t easy, especially when I knew Amelia was hurting.
“You will let us know when that changes,” I said. “The minute it changes,” I clarified.
“I will,” he said, and hung up.
I hung up too, and turned to Mom.
I didn’t even have to say anything more. The tears forming in her eyes gave away that she could already tell what I would have told her.

Before the girls came home, I walked upstairs. I knew Amelia didn’t want to speak with me, but I couldn’t help but want to be around her orbit. I was drawn to her like a flame.
I was surprised to see the door to the spare room open, and Amelia herself coming out of our shared bedroom with her arms full of her clothes.
“Let me help you,” I said.
