Chapter 489

Amelia’s POV

With the help of some servants, I moved one of the televisions from the house into my bedroom. Then, behind closed doors, I continued my training. To my surprise, my punches flew a bit harder this time. Once, I even punched straight through the porcelain of a bedside lamp.

I blinked, startled. My knuckles were cut but already healing.

“Is this your strength?” I asked my wolf.

“Yes,” she replied. “But we need to work on your aim.”

I blushed a little in embarrassment. Since I didn’t think breaking anything had been possible, I hadn’t really been trying to aim for or away from anything. I guessed I needed to start now.

Yet, even with this accident, and no real idea how I was going to explain it to the servants on staff, I was starting to feel a little bit excited by this new strength. I was filled with a fresh confidence I hadn’t really known before as myself.

When I’d been Annette, I had felt something like this capable and sure, with the strength of a wolf and the love of my family to back me up.

I’d gone through a lot of negative emotions in the past twenty-four hours, and while I was still going through them, this confidence was the first good thing I had felt, other than the relief of having my wolf restored.

“I am glad that you are feeling empowered,” my wolf told me. “But you must remain somewhat cautious. My strength gives you an advantage you did not previously had, but it only leveled the field among werewolves. There is a big difference between practicing punches in a room alone and actually fighting another person.”

She was right, but I still allowed myself a moment more to feel good about myself before reality came crushing back in.

I kept practicing. With my increased stamina, I could train for the rest of the day until it was almost time for Damien and the girls to return home. I quickly cleaned up and showered. In the bathroom mirror, I flexed and admired my new muscles.

I was getting better already, and not just because I was a quick study. Having a wolf really made all the difference.

But my wolf had been right. There were limits to my studies. Without a sparring partner, there was only so much I could improve.

Maybe… Well, I had a wolf now, and I was Luna. What right did anyone have to deny me training? And who would actually deny me? If Damien wasn’t there, then it shouldn’t be a problem, right?

It was at least worth a try.

“Can you imagine the look on Damien’s face when he realizes I’ve been training?” I joked to my wolf.

“Be cautious,” my wolf said, not as jovial as I was. “He won’t be pleased, and he has acted rashly before.”

I knew she meant when I had first fled, to hide at Jake’s pack. So much had happened since then, but his Overprotectiveness and his desire to keep me as his own had overridden his sense in that case,

“He could act that way again,” my wolf said.

“He wouldn’t. Not if he wants to actually keep me as his mate,” I said.

“To protect you from a battle, he might.”

I hated to admit it, but she was right. To protect me, there wasn’t a lot that Damien wouldn’t do, even risk me breaking the bond over it. But I wasn’t going to let the fear of what could be stop me. That was what Damien had done when he refused to tell me the truth about my past and our past together.

I would be better. I would stand up for myself. I would push forward and train until if and when the worst would come to pass.

In the meantime, I would hope that it wouldn’t.

Damien’s POV

I returned to the office the next morning moving a bit slower than I had been lately. The stress of the war was weighing on me, but I had been able to bear it with Amelia at my side. Now that I was also facing the stress of losing her, everything else felt so much heavier in turn.

I was weighted down, with every single step feeling heavier.

Alpha King Benedict noticed as soon as I walked into my office. “What happened to you? A fight with the mate?”

I looked at him.

“Don’t look so surprised,” he said. “You don’t get to be as old as me without seeing a few hurt males shuffle through the door. Alphas can fight the whole entire world, but one fight with the mate brings them down low. What happened?”

I supposed I shouldn’t hide the truth from him, especially since he was Amelia’s uncle. With a sigh, I sat down on one of the chairs facing him and said, “She saw a memory healer behind my

back.”

“I’m assuming it took,” Benedict said.

“Yes, you are assuming correctly.”

To his credit, he didn’t say I told you so, or really anything like that at all. Instead, he just nodded in a sage kind of way. He’d already said he thought this was the inevitable outcome, but even he mustn’t have thought it would be quite this soon.

It didn’t matter who was right anymore. What happened, happened, and I had no idea if Amelia would ever forgive me or be able to trust me again.

“She deserved to know,” Benedict said. “Now you might actually have a chance to be together forever.”

“This doesn’t help our odds,” I said bitterly.

“It does now,” Benedict replied. “Lying to her was your problem, Damien. You can’t live a lie, and in doing so, you didn’t give her a chance to trust and love you. Now, she has that chance. Now, you both do. Only with the

truth revealed do you have a chance to grow and love one another properly.”

I didn’t see it that way. I figured he was likely just taking pity on me. He was already right about Amelia remembering. What need did he have to rub in that she would now likely leave me as well?

I couldn’t help but be miserable, with the future so uncertain.

How could Amelia ever find it in herself to forgive me enough to want to be with me, after everything we have suffered through together, and all I had done?
