Chapter 491
Damien’s POV
The very last thing I wanted to do was train Amelia for battle. For her to be safe, she needed to be as far from the front lines as possible. Yet, as I looked into her eyes and she stared hard up at me, I knew she wasn’t just making an idle threat.
If I didn’t agree to help her, she would try to find someone else to do so. I could try to bar her from doing so by putting out a decree among my warriors, banning them from teaching the Luna. But that was sure to only make Amelia angrier with me, as well as to drive her further into desperation.
If I banned the soldiers from helping her, she would only turn to more dangerous methods, seeking out someone who would disobey me. Her seeking help from those that were not loyal to me could lead to her being hurt or kidnapped.
No. I needed to learn from the lessons of the past. To keep Amelia safe, I was the best one to train her. That way I had understanding of how she was learning and the level of her ability. Maybe it would be a chance for us to restore some of our connection, as well. I wouldn’t mind spending more time with her.
“Fine,” I said, somewhat begrudgingly. Even with the pros to the situation, I would have much rather she just stayed home where she was safe and protected, and flee with the children when the time came for war.
Of course, my dislike of wanting to train her was only part of my problem. The other, perhaps more troublesome concern, was what the training brought out in me…
My body was still thrumming with desire. It took everything in me to keep from adjusting myself in my pants. I didn’t want to call attention to my dick, which was semi-hard from when I had been on top of Amelia, pining her down.
It wasn’t just the position that affected me, it had been her reaction too. Now that her wolf had returned, her desire was even more palpable – I could scent it as plainly as I could see it with the fire in her eyes and the redness in her cheeks.
Even now, as she stared at me, I could see her breathing hard, and I could scent her lust for me on the wind. She was fighting her desire, just as I was, though I was certain she had more reasons for it other than embarrassment.
She was still furious with me. I knew she likely didn’t want to lead me on. Her own feelings were probably giving her a lot of internal conflict. I didn’t want to upset her more than I already had, so I pretended not to notice her desire.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t just us here. Glancing around, I realized that our sparring session had attracted the attention of practically everyone who had come to this morning’s training. The poor guard in charge was still trying to lead some of the people, but most of them had gathered closer to Amelia and me to watch.
As I became aware of our audience, I could start to focus on what they were saying.
And I realized how harsh they were being on Amelia.
“How dare she come here and make demands of the Alpha? Especially during times of war.”
“She might have a wolf now, but she’ll always be a human to me.’

“A good Luna would be quiet and subservient.”
“The once-wolfless should learn her place.”
Each comment angered me more than the one before.
“Quiet!” I said loudly, utilizing my Alpha voice. “You will not dare to speak badly of my mate, and you will not be so bold as to do so in front of me. All of you, disperse! Get back to your training!”
Some of the onlookers were immediately shamed and returned to their own training. An infuriating few were slower moving, still casting dark looks at Amelia.
“Go,” I said, even more firmly. “Focus on yourselves and becoming the best you can be.”
When the last of the stragglers finally turned away from us, I placed my hand on the small of Amelia’s back and led her toward the road where Keegan had already sent a car to take us home.
Amelia was silent for most of the ride, though as we neared our neighborhood, she spoke up.
“Thank you for standing up for me when they were speaking badly of me.
“You don’t have to thank me for that, Amelia. It is my honor and duty as your mate and Alpha to shield you from their unwarranted vitriol. I had thought, somewhat foolishly, I suppose, that after all this time, they would see you in a different light.”
“I’ll always be a human in some of their eyes, even with my wolf,” Amelia said. “They will always hate me…”
I wanted to argue with her, but I found it difficult to, especially with what just happened. Some of my pack had disliked Amelia straight from the start simply because she had grown up in the human realm. I had thought that, in time, this would change.
Apparently not.
–
That I had seen this much that these few were so bold as to speak against my mate even in front of me – I could only imagine how much Amelia actually suffered by my pack members.
“They will never respect me,” Amelia continued. “Unless I can prove to them my worth – on my own.”
“You don’t want my help?”
“I do,” she insisted. “Through our training, I will become stronger. I’ve learned that werewolves value strength and bravery above all else.”
“You already have bravery,” I told her.
“They don’t see that,” she said. “And if they do, they ignore those instances, placing the weight of my value in their misconceptions. The only way they will truly listen and see and know that I am worthy of being Luna is if I prove it through strength.”
As the car pulled up to the front of our estate, she said, “Please. I want to start training right away.”
“I have other duties right now,” I said. “I’m sorry. But we can start later, when I come back home.’
Her face fell a little and she looked away from me. I hated disappointing her, but I also knew she would

understand. She wouldn’t want me to neglect the pack during possible wartime for any selfish reason, even if it was something she really wanted.
