Chapter 512
Damien’s POV
I couldn’t stop from scanning the crowd, searching for Amelia. As this was the final fight, if she was still here, she had to be in the bleachers somewhere, cheering on her favorite fighter.
I wondered if she was cheering for Crow, or if she saw, as I did, the same unsettling and distasteful traits in him.
Not for the first time today, I wished she had chosen to join me and that she was sitting her beside me instead of hiding somewhere down among the crowd.
Even as the fight raged on, I found myself distracted, ever watchful for my mate.
“She’s not bad,” Keegan said. “She’s fast.”
The awe in his voice finally dragged my attention back to the ring where I watched as the much slighter Shadow consistently dodged each of Crow’s punches. The same onslaught that had taken down so many of my warriors was entirely lost on this opponent. Shadow simply ducked out of the way.
Crow roared, clearly frustrated as she slipped by him once again. And then again.
Until –
Crow gave up trying to punch Shadow and grabbed her instead. His arms came around her waist, trapping her arms to her chest.
Anyone might struggle in that moment, but Shadow didn’t.
It was as if she knew just what to do.
It was like she had practiced.
She dropped her weight suddenly, slipping down unexpectedly through Crow’s grasp. When her elbow was free, she jabbed it back into the base of his ribcage as hard as he could.
Crow gasped and let her go, and Shadow spun away, adding some distance between them.
I couldn’t believe it. I knew that move…
I had taught her that move.
No.
This couldn’t be…
Amelia?
Amelia’s POV
Barely two minutes into this fight and I already felt like I was fighting for my life.
Crow was so much bigger and stronger than me. He was slower, as I hoped, which had been my only saving grace
so far, but other than the elbow jab I had just landed, he hadn’t given me many openings.

And the way he was fighting was on the wrong side of desperate. He was acting like it was his life on the line.
This wasn’t a good natured fight with him. This was war.
He must have expected me to be an easy win, because he was growing more and more grunty and growly each time he missed me, like his frustration was building more and more.
I watched as his muscles continued to tense, as his growl became more consistent. And then as his teeth began to elongate.
Shifting was prohibited in this fight, as claws and teeth often became deadly, and this was supposed to be a friendly tournament.
Yet Crow didn’t seem to care about any of that. This man was shifting.
I held up my hand. “Now wait a minute.”
The referee noticed at the same time, and walked into the ring, moving to separate Crow and me.
“Crow!” he shouted. “Shifting is prohibited!”
Crow, mid-shift, swatted the referee way like he was nothing but an insignificant bug. The referee went flying into the crowd.
The crowd stopped cheering Crow’s name, and now began roaring in outrage.
“Cheater! Cheater!”
Crow threw his head back and roared. It became a howl halfway, as he dropped down to all fours, fully shifting into wolf form.
Then, in a flash, he surged for me.
He was a bit faster in wolf form, but he was still a werewolf built for strength more than speed and agility. I ducked down. He missed me, flying straight over top of me.
The moment seemed to slow.
Looking up, I saw the first opening of the fight.
As he leapt, teeth and claws forward, moving right over top of me, he had left his vulnerable belly exposed.
In a flash of my own, I surged upright, putting all of my strength, and my wolf’s strength, into the upward
uppercut.
My fist collided hard with his belly.
He yelped like a little pup then fell, snout first down onto the concrete. He slid to a stop then drooped, whimpering.
The man had dished out the pain today. But had he never taken a punch?
He only knew how to hit, and not how to take one?

As I stood there, I realized too late that in the intensity of the moment, my mask and my bandana had blown away. My hood had fallen down.
The crowd had been stunned silent. I had thought because I had taken out the clear projected winner. But as I looked around, seeing them all staring at me, I wondered if I was the one who had stolen their voices instead.
“Is that…?”
“It couldn’t be, but…?”
Then, starting with a small group of one or two and growing quickly, a new chant began.
“Luna! Luna! Luna!”
I was stunned, half-certain that I was dreaming, but that couldn’t be. Even in my wildest daydreams, I never would have been able to concoct a moment like this.
Slowly, I turned to face the VIP bleachers. I looked up, seeing the startled face of Uncle Benedict first, and then, closer, like he was on his way to jump into the ring himself, was Damien. His hands were curled around the railing, his knuckles white.
Our eyes met.
But then the rogue started to stir.
Damien hopped over the ledge, but instead of walking to me, he stormed to Crow. Dragging the man – and he was a man again, having shifted back – Damien tore the skull mask away, exposing Crow’s face.
Confusion crossed Damien’s face. I moved closer to see, then mirrored his confusion.
This man was a total stranger.
He blinked his eyes open, looking up at Damien with some bleariness. Though clarity followed soon enough.
“Let go of me, you bastard,” he growled.
“Who the hell are you?” Damien asked. “You aren’t one of my pack.”
“I’m a rogue, and damn proud of it,” Crow said. He grinned, that same shit-eating grin was even more unnerving without the skull mask. His eyes were wild, even with the large bruise blooming over half-his face. He looked crazed. “Feel that, Alpha? It’s shame. A rogue destroyed your warriors.”
